Whale Shark slaughter in Gujarat

  1. Err no offense to Mike but the WWF and other organizations had been campaigning and doing all sorts of surveys since 1998 to give the Indian government verification of the fact that the whale shark was an endangered species and it was protected in 2001. In fact, WWF and other NGOs continued to educate the Gujarati population on the whalesharks to fight against the poachers. Let's not forget to credit the NGOs who really facilitated the groundwork for the legislation.

  2. Interesting, I vividly remember seeing a documentary with a bulk of the same footage, same story line, different narrator back in mid 90's. If was the same cinematographer then, then his film work may have been what helped get the ball rolling.

  3. Have watched it at underwaterchannel too. Very touched.

Interesting that they now have a Whaleshark Day & a spiritual guru joined the campaign & helps persuade his followers not to hunt the whalesharks. Things work differently in different places...
