  1. The new Canon 500D shoots HD video but only at 20fps. What do the experts think - is this an issue?? - would it be better to shoot at 720 30fps

I'm definitely not an expert, but I'd rather shoot 720p@30fps. In any case, it's more than any other camera in its price range can do. I view the video feature as something fun to play with but if you are really serious about video I'd just go ahead and buy a dedicated video camera.

I Agree, but sometimes when confronted by some exceptional action it is good to be able to shoot some high quality video ( to sell to National Geographic or something).

  4. I have the Canon 500D, tested the video out at both settings, and the HD @ 20fps is useless(I exaggerate; If you are taking a video of a scene with nothing moving in it then the 20 fps is fine). There is a noticeable jerkiness in the play-back. The 720p @ 30 fps is good quality, and all that I now use. I can only hope that a future firmware upgrade can correct the issue, but I suspect the camera processor is not powerful enough to handle the HD @ any fps above the 20.

I have not used the camera underwater yet.

  5. Canon is sort of flailing about with crossover video, trying to segment the still camera market without disrupting their video markt and the result is a peculiar mix of non-standard formats with very limited control of settings that need to be controlled for video. I think there will be a big improvement in the next couple generations of cameras.

I have been playing with video on my 5D2 (not UW and i'm not a videographer) and have a little difficulty visualizing how i could get good results UW. Would love to hear UW techniques with "crossover" cameras
