  1. Hi all,

    These were taken on snorkel.

If nothing else, they have inspired me to try harder- shallow water blackout risks not withstanding.

    Enjoy?

  2. Wow!

    Great shots for snorkeling!

    Focusing must have been hard,

The moray shot is my fav

  3. Nice catch on the moray and friends.

  4. Thanks for the kind words guys!

The moray and the little fish together was a most pleasing find- basically he had taken up residence under a wooden pier in about 2 meters of water- and I just happened to find him by accident. In fairness the shot was a 'best of the series'- where the little fish and the moray all magically lined up together and everyone was in the clear....you know how it is...

I was lying on the bottom holding on to a rock with one arm and extending my rig (which now consists of a single ds-125 strobe as opposed to a ds-51) towards the subject... and pulling the trigger. I can only set the focus mode to center spot on the olympus 800- I can't physically lock it on a zone and recompose. I have to trust what the camera sees and hope its good.

The frogfish was much more challenging- he was basically sitting on a rock at 10 meters.

It was a case of- fin downwards as quickly as possible- (with camera zoom on and preset, and strobe on)- compose- fire- and then back to the surface

My visit to the maldives this year was super- even tho' vis wasnt as good this year.

The one really nice thing about snorkelling-as opposed to scuba diving- with my rig is a) I can take my time with a subject b) don't have to be worried about being left behind by the main group or © being lambasted by a buddy who doesn't know me or is not carrying a camera.

Of course all this is provided that we be mindful of d) safety/not pushing the edge of that breath hold.

  5. Well done Damo, nice ! - You did really well to capture them snorkeling !

I have tried such tings in the past, but find that I would like more time to settle than my breath holding allows !

    Take care,

    Rene.
