  1. Hey guys,

I recently went camping for a few days in the Atherton Tablelands of far nothern tropical Queensland, Australia - about an hour or two from Carins.

    Brilliant camping.

I was scouting out waterfall sites for photography. I took the camera to two waterfalls to see what results I could get. These were over hour long hikes (arghhh), my elbows were killing me when I finally got into the water. I'm definantly taking a back pack next time.

I really enjoyed this style of photography but it was incredibly difficult. There was minimal light and this combined with the narrow aperture (required for adequate DOF for the split image) made the shooting difficult. A new d700 with good noise reduction would have been a great tool as my D80 only goes up to iso 200 before results start degrading.

In sum - I need some baby oil or something to keep the dome clean of water droplets and I need a wider dome. I'm using a 6' with a 10-17mm and I can only get to 16mm before vignetting kicks in.

The spray from the waterfall was frustrating as it kept covering the dome port.

Probably the hardest part was finding suitable underwater compositions to balance the above water portion.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

    All the best, Stew

  3. Well I'd post some new pool shots but i'm pretty sure Wetpixel doesn't allow NWS images

  4. Yes a D700 at 800-1600 would be the ticket for that.

Cal, I've got a pool shoot today if I don't get rained out, I'll post later (blog for NWS  )

  5. Sweet!

    Good luck mate!

  6. Did you try using the rub spit on the dome technique?

I found that when doing surf photography it tends to make the water sheet off after immersion. To avoid spray just dunk the dome in the water and when you come up to do a half and half you get a few seconds of clean dome glass before the spray comes back.

  7. Thats exactly what I was doing Stephen. Great trick! I put it under and lifted it out whilst firing the shutter.

I didnt know you did surf photography? - Next Clark Little in the making.

I'm heading back out to the rainforest this weekend so I'm hoping for some good shots! I bought some baby oil to help with the dome.

  8. You need Johnson's Baby Shampoo ( no more tears ) which will help to get the water to bead off your port rather than Baby Oil which will smear and smudge all over your port.

  9. Lucky! I owe you a beer!

I was just about to run out the door for some waterfall photography when I thought I'd check this. I bought the johnsons baby oil. So its the johnsons baby shampoo I need?

    Great!
