YS-110 (Broken? Not firing)

  1. Hi guys

I have two YS 110 strobes on my D200 (aquatica) fired by dual synch cords.

Was just hoping to pick a few brains about my current experience and problems with my second strobe.

Went for a dive over the weekend and in doing my test shots before the dive I noticed that my left hand strobe wasnt firing (sync corded) . I tried to fire it in both the manual and TTL settings, and then as a slave light, but to no avail. I then switched it over to the sync cord that was firing the other strobe, and it still would not fire. Seemed to be receiving some kind of signal from the camera as the red light would dim slightly when I was depressing the shutter but no flash. The target focus light was working fine on the unit, and the 4 AA batteries were fully charged.

So I am wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem before. Is it likely that the unit is stuffed, or am I missing something? If it is stuffed, can it be repaired, or is it a throw away jobby?

    Appreaciate any help

    Steve

  2. No joy with my query here? Will have to refer it on to the Sea and Sea service department.

  3. Do you mean 2 single sync cords or 1 dual (Y type) sync cord? If you're actually using a dual cord, can you try to fire strobe with single cord?

  4. Hi Stephen,

Is it possible that the slave switch had been moved from being firmly in the off position ?

It's easy to do and is enough to stop the strobe from firing.

I use two single 5 pin syncs. The aquatica housing provides two bulk heads.

    Thanks for the info Peter.

I did turn the slave switch on and off a couple of times trying to fire it in both sync and slave modes but I will check this again tonight. Have emailed the sea and sea technical guys too so hopefully they can get back to me soon.

I dont know if the Aussie distributor (Aquanaut) are likely to be helpful here given the strobe is about two years old?

Do you have any old YS-110 stock left in Cairns, or is it all YS-110alpha these days?

  7. Advice from our local distributors is that most likely the internal module is faulty and will need to be replaced. It can be fixed though. This is good news! Lets hope it doesnt cost too much!

  8. Unfortunately they could not fix this strobe here in Australia. They now want to charge me $$ to send it to Japan just to get a quote to fix it. Pain in the butt!

    Hi Steve,

Sorry about the timing of my reply but don't visit WP as often as I would like. I had a photo student using an Aquatica housing and two SS 110a's recently. He bought all this new and for a D90. We had a similar problem in that one strobe would not fire. In the Aquatica housing manual, there are directions on how to set four 'switches' (small) and located inside and on the upper right hand side of the front part of the housing. Can't recall if these were to be set in the off or on position. Once we got these set, both strobes worked.

I know this info is some months late and perhaps you now already know this. If not, hope this helps.
