shots from Canon 60mm + 1.4x TC

  1. Last weekend I tried Canon 60mm Macro Lens + 12mm tube + 1.4x Kenko TC.

I have not seen any results from this setup so I wanted try myself.

AF still working fine but bring focus light is good idea.

These are not very good example but you can get some idea (I hope).

  2. very cool shots, your lighting is excellent. my only question is do you really need an extension tube with the 60mm lens. Extension tubes allow you to focus a lens closer than its minimum focus distance, but if the canon is anything like the nikon 60mm, it can practically focus on the front of the port. This would make an extension tube obsolete as you don't need to focus any closer. The teleconverter, however helps as it makes the lens longer and retains the same minimum focus distance. Just a thought. But very nice photos & compositions.

  3. Thanks,

Not like Oly 50mm or Nikon 60mm, Canon 60mm macro lens doesn’t take a teleconverter So, I have to put tube between the two.

    Soon I will try 2x & 3x tc setup with 60mm.

  4. Hi escape,

I noticed you have a S&S RDX-450D housing... which port are you using w/ this combination?

  5. Beautiful photos Enje, they are all very crisp. I esp like the close-up of the porcelain... Thanks for sharing your experiments.

    Hi hcchu,

I use compact macro port (111 / for 100mm lens).

You can put "60mm + 12mm tube + 1.4/2x tc setup" in this port.

The port still usable with "100mm + 1.4x tc" but from 2x you need extension ring between port & port base.

  8. Have you ever used just Canon 60mm + Kenko 1.4x?

It will not fit together. The canon 60mm is efs mount, teleconverter only accepts ef mount. To get round this you have to add EF12 II ectension tube which does accept a efs mount and this will then allow you to mount the teleconverter. The issue is the mounts hence why a extension is used effectively as a mount converter!

  10. Wonderful shots - great composition and lighting. The last goby shot is outstanding!

One way to get around this is to use the Tamron 60mm f2.0 lens. You can add a a teleconverter to it directly and the combination with a Kenko 1.4 works really well.

  12. I'm glad I re-read this post as the penny has dropped... Now I can use my Kenko TC and 60mm Canon with the 12 or 25 mm tube in between. With the Nauticam macro port 60 supporting 67mm wet lenses there's a whole new world of super macro opened up!

  13. Excellent shots and, thanks, most excellent work around for using a TC on the 60mm :)

Tim, I am curious, since you have both : what would you say of the benefits of using the 1.4TC with a 60+ext.tube, over a 100mm+1.4TC (which already fits naturally)?

    Hi Luko,

You make a very valid point and is one which had not escaped me either...

My initial (dry) comparison between the 60mm and 100mm appear to show an improved working distance with the 100mm and TC combination, even when using the extension tube. I suspect focusing will be a nad quicker with the 100mm too. However at this level of magnification I am more inclined to set the lens to MF and adjust the working distance to achieve sharp focus rather than test the AF. I think a monopod or tripod will be useful too. In fairness, maybe the 60mm, TC and tube combo offers a more cost effective super macro solution but may be a compromise over the flexibility and image quality which the 100mm and TC offers.

With either option behind a Nauticam 60 macro port I can also bring my 67mm INON UCL's into play. Happily, I can also use the UCLs topside too as the 100mm filter thread is 67mm.
