  1. Hi

I am about to go on a longer shooting trip and would like some feedback on people s favourite photographers. Primarily underwater and natural history photographers, but I am particularly interested in professionals that are pushing the envelope in terms of content or technique.

    All input most welcome....

I have several 'favorite' photographers, but there are a few whose work is truly inspirational. James Balog is one of them. He seems to be a very innovative and resourceful photographer who works very hard to create new ways of seeing nature. Check out his website here:

and also this description of one of my favorite photos he made:

For underwater photography, my favorite photographer is Doug Perrine. He is a prolific photographer and has made some iconic images that I'm sure you've already seen. (the bronze whaler sharks feeding on sardines is certainly one) He shows a lot of seemingly redundant shots on his website (because he shoots and markets stock photos) but look through them like an editor and you'll see that he is a remarkable artist and a keen observer.

Perhaps the most impressive nature photographer - and the first that came to my mind when I read your post - is Frans Lanting. A truly complete nature photographer who seems to be able to make stunning art out of anything, anywhere. Check out this companion website to his book, 'Life: A Journey Through Time' and you'll see what I mean:

I hope these artists inspire you like they do me.

  3. A couple of stellar photos right now in my opinion:

    Alex Mustard (www.amustard.com )

    and Masa Ushioda ( www.coolwaterphoto.com )

    Totally dream like images......

  4. The name that instantly comes to mind is Alex Mustard (www.amustard.com ). He's always thinking of new ways to make uw photos different and more interesting...creating art, not just images! Truly an inspiration!

  5. Alex is definitely one of the best today. For an up and comer check out Pedrag Vukovic, he brings a different eye to the work. There are so many great folks working today I hate to leave anyone out but the guy whose images continue to inspire me is Chris Newbert. "Within A Rainbow Sea" is still the gold standard even though it was published in 1985. Being old school, I also still love to look at Howard Hall's early still work.

    Have fun,

Franz Lanting and his wife Chris Eckstrom's Life project is probably the standout wildlife / natural history series for me ever.

Another awesome project in a similar vein with a great mix of topside and underwater work is Ashes and Snow. http://www.ashesandsnow.org/

  7. I second, the above. Franz lanting is an amazing hard working, and incredibly talented photographer. I also agree on alex mustard. Having met him, he is talented, creative, always trying something new, and a generous and nice guy.

  8. Sorry I was a not contributing.

Wildlife wise I d third that... Frans Lanting is an incredible photograhper. Also Michal ''Nick'' Nichols has some incredible work, particulary working in diffcult environments and his fantastic use of camera traps. Very inspirational

Underwater obviously the big names Hall, Doubilett, Mustard, Michael Aw produce some fantastic images.

For photojournalism it would have to be Sebastiao Salgado, which I think is one of my all time favorite photograhpers for the respect and humanity he conveys in his images...

Some of the name I haven t heard of so I ll check them out.. Thanks.

    Anyone got any more???

  9. Topside, Nick Brandt's stuff blows me away.... Here's an interesting link full of speculation about how he gets his "effect" where chimes in on a few things..

Underwater, I'll have to add Wes Skiles and Brian Skerry..

    Have fun!

    Chris
