Single strobe placement

  1. Hi, all. I'm an experienced UW photographer but new to underwater SLRs, so please bear with me.

I was wondering about general strobe placement guidelines, if there are such things, for a single strobe -- in this case, the DS-160 on an Ikelite housing.

I've seen lots of pictures of setups, and have seeing a dizzying variation in light placement -- tight against the top of the housing; well above and in plane with the camera, pointed forward; above and in front of the housing pointed down; tucked under the side of the housing pointed forward; etc.

I would suspect that there would be three main "use cases" here: very wide angle (reefscapes, e.g. Tokina 10-17); "medium-range" (fish portraits, 30-50mm-ish); and macro.

I would also expect conditions to play a part, e.g. minimizing backscatter in relatively poor conditions.

    Thanks much,

    Dan
