Aquatica Bulkheads on my 5D Mark II Housing?

7 posts
  1. I just got my 5D MII housing last week and was putting it together today when I noticed something strange. It has nikonos bulkhead fittings in the top of the housing. Im almost positive I ordered ikelite bulkheads.

    Im using some Ikelite DS200 strobes, whith the ikelite 4302.52 dual cord. But instead of plugging the dual cord into the bulkhead on the housing, my dealer sold me a ikelite 4302 TTL adapter. (it rotates from ttl to manual) Everything in the manual for the 4302 references using a nikon camera, not a canon.

    Do I have to use the 4302 adapter to be able to shoot TTL, or am I just unecessarily adding another adapter into the loop of cables to compensate for the nikonos bulkheads? IF I had the correct ikelite bulkheads, could I just plug my 4302.52 cord into the bulkhead and still be able to shoot TTL?

    I am pretty sure that you can only get one Ikelite Bulkhead and one Nikonos on Aquaticas (at least time I asked about that, Jean is around here often so he will have definate answers) As to the Ikelite synch cords, I thought they only made those type of cords to TTL with certain non-Ikelite housings, solely with certain Nikon (not Canon) cameras. To get TTL with the Canon in a Aqautica you would need a Heinrichs convertor. I would be very interested to hear if something has changed since the last time I looked at this.

  3. That Ikelite cable is only for use with Nikon, there isn't one available for Canon and my understanding is that it is very unlikely there ever will be one made available by Ikelite.

    The Aquatica 5DII housing comes with either two Nikonos (#20062) or a single Ikelite bulkhead (#20062KM).

    Take a look at Aquatica's price list;

    http://aquatica.ca/subpages/catalog/produc..._price_list.pdf

    and you'll see the options noting that the Nikon housings have Ikelite manual or Ikelite TTL options (for use with the cable you have), the difference being the number of connectors in the bulkhead that are wired.

    There maybe other options available to you besides return and replace and others will contribute those, but I would like to say that I have a 5DII with Aquatica/ Ikelite bulkhead, I gave up on TTL a few years ago, very happy I did!

    Cheers,

    You sir, are correct. (although my 5d housing has 2 nikonos bulkheads) I Just got off the phone with Aquatica, Ikelite and my local dealer, and ttl is not possible without the Heinrichs converter, which is found here...

    Ive been researching a bit, and have heard (rumors) that the external heinrich converter has issues with flooding. Anyone else out there have any experience with the internal or external converter?

    I have the external adapter that runs off of the S6 bulkheads. While it looks awfully fragile it hasn't had any issues with flooding. BUT when you put on your cable to the strobe (not the camera) make sure the threads are well lubricated. I had one totally freeze in Indonesia and was dead for the whole trip. Sent it back and Ryan fixed it but it was still painful.

  6. If you have stainless connector that mates with aluminum bulkhead, be prepared to disconnect & service every day to prevent/minimize electrolysis. As mentioned these can freeze up & cause problems. Put some silicone grease on the male threads - this helps.

  7. I'd venture to say we sell more of these Heinrichs converters than anybody on the planet, and we haven't had a single one returned due to flooding. They haven't been immune to failure, but the issues we see are usually electrical in nature.

    I'm sure you know this by now, but you'll need an S6 bulkhead in your housing too.
