Audio recording for Video

  1. I like to have some topside shots for my trip videos, but the wind is always so loud and you can't hear anyone. What mics are out there that can be used wit hsome sort of a windshield to get good audio? are there any that can plug into the 5D mk2?

  2. Sennheiser and Rode both have a video mic that isn't too expensive. The quality is good. I like the Sennheiser wind filter. "Dead cat" with a basket are considered the best wind shields. Rode has one too but it's a bigger unit. I suggest you go to a store and test for stuff like interference etc. If you are serious about sound, then you should consider a beachtek XLR adapter and a XLR mike.

If you are using the 5D2, get the magic lantern firmware with AGC off.

  3. what is magic lantern?

  4. Hi video guys :notworthy:

Anyone actually using the beachtek device on their 5Dmkii? or 7D for that matter.

I want to get my audio quality sorted, and am considering one.

I have also seen the juicedlink version

I would prefer not to go the separate digital recording device route given my situation, so am *hoping* one of these will be suitable.

I currently have a Rode Stereo Video mic, but find it a bit "wide" for picking up spoken word, so am also considering one of these Sniper Kits from Que Audio.

Your advice is appreciated as always!

    thanks

  5. I have the Juicedlink CX231...significantly better audio output than Beachtek. Neither is necessary if you use a self-powered mic like the RODE NTG-2 (but audio noise will be higher than with a good phantom powered mic...eg Rode NTG-3). The great thing is this gear will still work well once you've moved on from the Canon 5D2 to the next camera.

Magic Lantern is now not necessary for audio since Canon's latest firmware allows ACG over-ride and manual gain control. In fact ML is simply a firmware overlay...which vanishes every time you turn the camera off. Not very practical for out of the studio work!

  6. I have both Rode dead cats and Storm Chaser dead cats (http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/windcutter_douglas.html) Both are good tho Rode seems to be more expensive. Keep in mind that you can also control the audio gain within your cam. Audiences will put up with less than stellar video but bad audio is a sure way to clear them out of the audotorium.
