  1. So is this going to be adapted by Sea and Sea now? Will it work in the new housing of the 2g and is it worth really getting if someone already has the 2g?

  2. The specs for the sensor are almost identical to that of the Panasonic LX3. 1 1/7" sensor for the Ricoh 10.4 mil pixels. 1/16.3", 10.31 mil pixels for the LX3. Both went to a smaller pixel count in a larger sensor to improve image quality.

Worked for the LX3. Could they be using the same sensor?

  3. Panasonic make their own sensors, Ricoh's sensors are by Sony.

I think the GRDIII is more interesting as an indication of what the GX300 might be like rather than as an underwater camera itself. I struggle to think of how useful the fixed 28 mm lens would be. Sure, you could make it wider with a wet lens, but even with a 1 cm close focusing distance, it's not going to be great for macros, is it?

  4. I see the new Cannon G11 also using a 1 1/7 10 mil mp senor. If they aren't all the same then they are following the same design policy to a Tee.

Reduced mps and larger sensor to give better noise reduction and improve IQ.

    A very smart idea imho.

  5. A thought on using these cameras UW. 28 mm is better than longer. But it is not really wide. You want at least 24 mm equivalent. If you have a 35 mm lens at least you can put on a lot of UW wide angle conversion lenses. These lenses vignette on a 28 mm lens.

The manufacture needs to make a special UW wide angle converter to get the most out of their camera's 28 mm lens. Can you say $$?

Still the Ricoh and the Cannon have UW options that sadly the Panasonic does not.

Agreed. I think the compact market is probably more exciting right now than the SLR side. Prosumer cameras are back in fashion, with Ricoh, Canon and Panasonic all having very strong propositions. Bigger sensors are in fashion: the Ricohs, the LX3, the Canon G11 AND S90, and the Fujifilm F200. And there's a lot of work going into high ISO performance and DR, with Sony apparently doing remarkably well with the WX1 (a very cool looking camera by the way).

It seems clear that there's huge consumer demand for better performing compacts. Maybe the initial DSLR craze has passed and people now realize that what they really want are smaller, more portable cameras that can handle all their needs.
