  2. Hey Ben

    Lovely camera!

Lots of people use Ikelite housings and are very happy with them. For sure the non-perspex ones cost more - but will not necessarily give you better results. They are generally more compact and ergonmically more efficient. And, damn, they look good :) But its the guy behind the camera that takes the picture - not the equipment.

Lenses: it depends what pictures you want to take. Most people will tell you 60mm for fish pictures; a 10-17 for wrecks and wide angle views. An 18-35 is probably good for Big Fish - but not so great for general fish pictures. And should be fine for most reef scenes using the FX sensor on the D700. It is no use for macro - so a factor is the type of photography you want to do; and the conditions in which you are diving. As an example, here at KBR in the Lembeh Straits where macro is king, an 18-35 would not be much use.

Strobes: sure you can manage with one and if you are new to u/w DSLRs probably is a good way to start. Two strobes give you the benefit of being able to control lighting on both sides of your picture and achieve a balance - if that is what you want; or more creative lighting.

I hope this helps a bit.

  3. You can make fantastic photos w/ a D700, Ikelite housing, and one strobe.

I would not recommend taking the Ikelite housing in the surf though and shooting surfing. It is not designed for that.

    Cheers

    James
