Finding out your camera's shutter count (possibly Nikon only)

  1. I guess it is mainly curiosity, but it is always interesting to know how many pix you have taken with your camera.

I saw this tip on DPReview this morning, which I thought was worth sharing as it is so simple. Open you RAW file in Preview on a Mac and press CMD+I. The shutter count is listed under the Nikon tab.

I don't have many Canon Raw files on my computer, but the ones I checked didn't work - there is not much listed under the Canon tab.

Anyone else got any easy ways of checking shutter count on cameras to share - ideally using software people will already have or free-ware?

    Alex

p.s. In case anyone is interested. The photo, one the most recent I have taken with my D700, is of my Hasselblad housing (we were using the D700 for metering - which is why the ISO is set at 160 for Fujichrome Pro 160 film).

  2. In Photoshop CS3, go to File > File Info...

In the new popup window click “Advanced” on the left of the screen.

Then double click on “http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/" or click on the little "+" sign next it.

The drop down list will provide information on camera serial number, lens information, which lens was used and finally at the bottom of the list next to the “aux:ImageNumber:” heading, it will list your frame count for your shutter actuations.

Works for Nikon, don't know about Canon though.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Hmmm, nope unfortunately none of these two methods work for the 5D2 (at least not mine) - the last method gets closest actually displaying a number. Only problem is that the number is: 0...

I don't have the solution, but pls tell us if anyone out there knows how to get a 5D or 5D2 to tell us how many clicks it has on it.

    D.

  4. Don't have CF card for my D300 handy, but as I recall when I download, the card has a default sub folder containing the pics. The name of this folder (XXX1, XXX2, etc.) changes every 10,000 shots. The file sequence # resets at the same time. So by checking folder # & file seq # I believe you can determine the total number of shots camera has taken. I'll have to double check this next time downloading.
