Housing Options for Canon 5D Mark II

  1. I am looking to completely upgrade my current rig from a Canon XTi in an Ikelite housing to the 5D Mark II and would appreciate any reccomendations and supporting logic. I want to be able to use my twin Ikelite DS125 Strobes, preferably (but not required) with TTL capability. I don't have an unlimited budget on the housing since I will be upgrading LOTS of gear (lenses, ports, etc) so would like to stay under 3,500 on the housing. I was thinking aquatica, but have no idea what the advantages/pros cons of the options might be and thought I would leverage the experience of the community in addtion to what I know will be extensive research on my part.

    Thanks all for your feedback!

I have just purchsed the MK2 and am thinking of selling my liver to pay for all the new lenses, ports, strobes and housing.

I bought the Sea&Sea housing, mainly because I could still get TTL with my 160 and 125 Ikelite strobes. That was a big deal for me since I had previously not liked the slave strobe setup. I will be taking it to Cocos with me next week so I can't comment on it's useability underwater. Right now all of the functions appear to be available and in the same general places as the actual camera. I can tell you that if you are looking for something compact and well built this would be the housing for you. My ikelite housing for my G9 is LARGER than the Sea&Sea for the MKII, with the MKII being a much larger camera than the little G9. I think the housing is right around $3500. I did a lot of research on this board and elsewhere before making my final decision.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Thanks for the reccomendation; this is particularly helpful as I was not looking forward to giving up the TTL capability that I have with the Ikelite housing and my twin DS125 strobes, which I intend to keep.

Please drop a note back once you have used the housing in Cocos, ok? I have until November to get my homework done before I buy!

    Cheers,

  7. Is optically fired TTL available with the Sea and Sea housing for 5DII?

  8. Is optically fired TTL available with the Sea and Sea housing for 5DII?

5dmk2 does not have internal flash to use optical cable. However, there

is 'Inon electric-optical converter' (not selling in US for patent issue)available

    for manual optical fire.

    Hi Donna,

I decided to get the Aquatica. Mostly the decision was based on price. But the fact that I had the Aquatica A20 previously, still have the accessories, and the fantastic service I received from Aquatica, I really had little choice. I just purchased the housing on (cough) eBay. US$2900, free shipping, US$200 Microsoft Cashback (love it), US$58 eBay bucks also helped a little. Now I just need a lens other than the 100mm Macro.
