Ikelite port for the Canon 100mm 1:2.8 EF USM Macro

  1. Hi folks,

I am planning to buy the Canon 100mm 1:2.8 EF USM Macro, and was wondering if it would fit into my ikelite port #5505.58, which I used to use with my Tamron 90mm.

    Thanks for helping

    Cheers

    Daniel

  2. Hi Daniel

The canon 100mm uses a port with the number #5505.45( Port chart: http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/2port_canon.html). But i dont know if it will work with the #5505.58 that you have.

    regards

    Hi Mads,

Thank you for your fast response, but I had knowledge of the recommended port. My main goal is to reduce the costs of switching to the Canon lens and to use it with a diopter. I have the port #5505.58 and was wondering if someone out there has any experience using that port with the canon lens...

    Cheers

  3. I have a port without focus knob for my 100mm and room to spare for a diopter, dont know the number. To check if it will work, find out the lens lengths the ports are recommended for.

    http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/2port_standard.html

the overview says the port is a bit longer then the recommended one. Since the 100mm doesnt move, and has quite a narrow field, I dont think an inch extra room will be a problem.

  4. Edited bc I'm at home now and got accurate data and pictures.

Ike recommends 5508.45 for the 100 (not 5505.45?) (with focusing knob), and that's the one I have. It has ZERO room for a diopter (we're talking like half a mm clearance to the front glass), but works perfectly without. No vignetting.

I just ordered the 5505.58 so I can use 1.4x teleconverter with the 100. Without teleconverter, there is about 2" of extra room at the end of the port. Since the lense has such a narrow field of view, I thought this might not be a problem. However, I took a couple pictures through it in this configuration right now, and it looks to be a bit affected, although it might be my imagination, might also be easily corrected in post.

    Here are pics.

First, the 100mm with teleconverter in 5505.58.

    Lense toward end of port

Then, the 100mm without the tele in same port, 5505.58.

    Lense with 2" to spare

I hope those image links work.

[i guess they don't. Something about the format is off???]

    So there are links instead.

I had to crank up the exposure of the second one half a stop more than the first one in lightroom to make them the same approximate brightness, but that could have been because of my nonscientific test. Other than that they look pretty much the same - I was expecting bad vignetting, but I don't see it. One might be able to imagine a bit of light vignetting, but I don't know. Esp since ports are so bulky to carry around, you might try with the one you have, and if it doesn't work, get the other. You'll have room for a teleconverter and diopter at any rate!

  5. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I will definitely buy the 100mm canon and use it with my current port. I really want to use the lens with a +4 diopter to get as much magnification as I can.

    Cheers

  6. Have fun with it, it's a great lense.

  7. Hello everyone!

Does anybody have any experience with using the Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens in an Ikelite flat port? Ikelite only recommend a dome, but I would like a flat port as well for sharper macro shots. Any idea if the #5506 (4.5" flat port with focus) will work, i.e. if the knob on the port can control the zoom sleeve on the lens?

    Thanks!
