Diving sites near to Auckland New Zealand?

5 posts
  1. Hi,

I have a really good friend that recently got a job in Auckland New Zealand and he is looking for a place to live.

He doesn't dive but I told him that I will go to visit him if he finds a place near to some good diving sites. Well he is the kind of guy that takes this kind of comments very seriously. :)

So here goes my question: if you work in Auckland in the sector of CBD, is there a place not far to 40 minutes from work and not far to 2 hours from a GOOD dive site?

I'm not asking for an specific house, just a sector where he can look for something.

I know that this is an strange question. :)

    Regards,

    Andres.

  2. Not a local but i spent over a month in NZ some years ago and loved the country . Auckland is a great place to live , they have some dive sites nearby the city but can't comment because don't know them The town of Tutukaka if i don't remember wrong is about a little more than 2 hours drive from Auckland on very scenic and quite roads. Boats departure from Tutukaka to dive the Poor Knights that is a beautiful place for diving .

If your friend like nature and outdoor activities he will love NZ.

Hope that some kiwi here give you more accurate info.

    Good luck

  3. While I dove the Poor Knights and can highly suggest he makes the effort to dive them, I do know there is diving in the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty, or further down to Hawke Bay. Have him do some searches on Coromandel and Bay of Plenty to start. NZ is a great country.

  4. Poor Knights. Stingray mating season in January/February. Interesting kelp formations with ~ 3-5 foot stems swaying in the surge. Endemic nudibranchs were very interesting, and we saw Mola molas on the boat ride over from Tutukaka.

  5. Definitely another plug for Tutukaka - we LOVED poor knights islands. The EAC ends there, and you get some really lovely fish life there. I remember seeing all 4 different moray eel variations on a dive, plus numerous shaols of fish that are definitely worth the trip.

I also remember reading that Goat Island isn't too bad, but not too sure about it. Give the local dive shop at Tutukaka a ring to see if they have any other suggestions...
