Underwater Photography the hard way...

  1. Found this fine art approach to underwater photography using custom made (from found objects by the look of the cameras), underwater, pinhole, cameras with 4" x 5" sheet film, exposed from, and developed / printed on a kayak while at sea.

The camera housing also serves as the developing tank. The film is processed immediately on board his kayak and black and white prints are made using a portable custom built light tight darkroom.

Definitely not the easiest way to take underwater photographs, but you got to admire the inventiveness. He even takes a stab at making a panoramic underwater pinhole camera print too!

Truly amazing photography and concept, not of the type we generally see or aspire to here at Wetpixel.

I wonder if he is a member here on wetpixel.com :)

You can find information about the artist here

Here are some quick links to:

  2. Whoah. Now there's an artist for whom the journey is definitely the art.

  3. I like his Kayak setup and housing. Something to be said about the ground up approach.

  5. Cool. I dida pin-hole shot last week, although it was on land.

Thanks for sharing, Paul. Always nice to see a unique approach.

  6. Mad Genius!

  7. Now that's something you don't see everyday! :)

  8. So to what depth do you think that pinhole camera is leakproof?

Actually very cool though, the Amish approach to underwater photography.

  9. So to what depth do you think that pinhole camera is leakproof?

Interesting conundrum if you think about it.

I guess lens filters can be indispensable in some situations. :)

The part on his website about making a camera obscura out of a small rowboat was pretty interesting too. Not sure about its' practicality but interesting none the less for some of us.

  10. Sweet.

"Fine art" stuff like this doesn't really interest me though as usually the most interesting part of it is the gimmicky means rather than the end result.
