  1. UPS delivered our newest addition yesterday. Needless to say, being 1000 miles+ from the nearest ocean is not very nice right now. The local testing pool awaits...

Seemed appropriate to use a Nat. Geo Photo coffee table book as a rest.

    The 100mm micro with port/extension

The tokina 10-17 with dedicated tiny port. Hope those corners are sharp enough...

The wife says things like... "Glad you got what you wanted, honey. Now we do not have to spend more money on that..."

How do I tell her I won a 60mm micro on ebay last night? :)

Sweet Dave! Did you save any money for a camera :) Go out and get them tigers.

  3. very nice, congrats. the small dome will be a great addition.

  4. Hopefully you'll be using the fiber optic ports. Go into the Customs menu/flash, set flash to manual & power to 1/100 of full. This works great on my D300 with S&S 110/27's setup. Conserves camera battery.

  5. It looks wonderful, congratulations. Can you tell us, where did they split the body, it looks like just in front of the top lcd information screen. Does this give you full access to the memory cards and battery without having to remove the camera at all?

    Nice, enjoy.

As to the lens, just sort of sneak it into the house and do not let your wife know anything about photography. It could slip in under the radar that way. It is always a trade off, teaching photography and the rest to the spouse gets an extra hand for carrying things and understanding why each new piece is absolutely critical yet makes it more difficult to sneak things in since a 70-300 then begins being noticed as something different than a 60mm. Otherwise they sort of blend in :)

  7. Congratulations Dave on the safe delivery of your Baby!

It kinda seems a waste sitting there so far from the seas though. Perhaps you could send it to me

to trial for you, I live 20mins from a great dive :) Totally envious of yours as I sit here oh so patiently

waiting for mine to arrive too.

Dave have you worked out how/where you are going to attach a focus light?

    Cheers,

    Jim.

You are correct. The split is in front of the top lcd screen. This does give access to the SD card while leaving the camera in the housing. The battery cannot get out however. You can open the battery door but it does not clear the base section of the housing front.

You can remove/replace ports and lenses without taking the camera out of the housing as well.

Instructions are in Japanese only with a few English words in places. I was given D70 housing instructions (by a MOST KIND wetpixler) in English which appear to be sufficient so far.

Thanks Dave. Japanese housings are notorious for little to no instruction, not even stickers for the button controls. suppose that means, know your camera well, the housing is just a box that is supposed to keep water out. :)

Not sure what there is to know that needs instructions? Settings, Care, Maintenance?

    This nexus housing looks great!

More importantly, how is the view finder?

    JIm,

I am willing to send mine to you but I only trust it to personal delivery. Whatever money is left in the bank will now be spent on a diamond necklace for the wife. Its the 'payment' for me spending ridiculous sums on this housing. Ah, I wish to visit your area...and many others in the south pacific.

As to the focus light, looks like the best place is to have a 3-way clamp on the ULCS connection. I have ULCS arms and bought "ULCS BA-AQN Base Adapter for Aquatica Handles, ULCS Pivot Trays" for the arm connection to the housing. If I change from a regular clamp to a 3-way, it looks like that would work well for a focus light on a ULCS ball. I use an LED 360 on a 'YS ball connector' but need to put a red shield on it as its too bright.

I tried the Neck Ball adapter AC-NB (which I used on my G9 rig) connecting to the BA-AQN but it interferes with other knobs and buttons on top no matter if I put it on the left or right side.

It actually came with English stickers for the buttons! I have not installed any so far, working on memorizing the locations of the buttons I use often which seems easy enough.

I like the view finder so far....only one pool test - today. I have the 'pickup' finder which allows easier total screen viewing but at a smaller size.

I was worried about using it prior to arrival and was thinking I would require an Inon 45 view finder but I think this will work well for my next outing in North Carolina. I can see from handling today where a 45 degree finder would be nice for wide angle but more difficult for a 105mm to pick up/align.

  12. DD1 - The main o-ring in these housings requires some finesse in removing & replacing. Try not to remove it more than necessary. I would suggest getting a complete Overhaul Kit, which includes all o-rings & c-clips, if you travel much. The kit has been hard to find in the US. PM me for a source if you like.

I like to mount my focus light directly in line with the lens. I tried the 3-way camp; I have to reaim everytime the strobes are adjusted. With the light in the same plane, only a slight adjustment for distance is required. I suppose that the Nexus port clamps are best, but they are a little pricey for me. I use a modified Fantasea port clamp.

I suggest backups for your lights. Don't forgret to post your pics for all the high and dry until next season folks.

    Bob

  14. I mount a small focus light on a small ULCS plate with short ball extension on top of the left handle. This makes it independent of strobe position. It swings down across the top of the port, just in front of the housing for storage. So far so good. Sorry I don't have the P/N's handy. Personally I prefer not to mount anything directly to any part of the housing (except top of handles) to prevent any possible side loading (no matter how small) or any damage to threaded holes in housing. For example, the black mounting plate on the front left side of the housing (viewed from front) has been removed. If there was ever a problem with these tapped holes you're looking at housing repair vs just a new bracket.

  15. Is there a cheaper option for protecting the threads/face of the back of ports/domes? The Nexus one's are $60 a pop.. jeez. and I need 2 more. What are others using?

I like JCCLINK's idea of the extension/plate/ball. I will check into that further. I agree with Bob's reservations about the 3-way clamp and having it all lined up. I had that on my G9 rig and want to duplicate it on the D90.

    From today's pool testing:

I have about 100 pool drain photo's with wide angle, close up wide angle and 105 micro.

Another several dozen of other diver's dive watches with the 105.

Several more of divers in a boring pool setting, with wide angle.

I am willing to sell any of them to you, Bob...how many can I put you down for? :)

  16. Sorry to mention this but $60 is gutter change in the world of DSLR. The Nexus port caps are the best protection - go for it. Have we mentioned spare parts?????

    Yo Dave,

We can swap; I have drain shots from last spring AND cool little toy critters. I have used some plastic stuff from the grocery store, but I think JC is right; the Nexus stuff is the best. You may want a bowl with lid to pack the dome port. To misqoute H. D. Throeau Improvise, improvise, improvise ....
