Inon vs. Sea&Sea vs. Epoque vs. Anyone else?

  1. Can anyone shed light (pun) on this subject?

At present i use and love my Canon ixus 85. Have some amazing shots im super happy with and thinking of going into the big time and paying the bucks for a proper set up. I own two Epoque strobes and to be frank they suck. Both are unreliable in the charge. The conductor just doesnt seem to hold the charge at all. The recharge rate is slow, and the battery life is abismal, at about 2hrs for a set of batteries. i bought one and it was failing so had it re-serviced and fixed but has since done the smae thing (?!!! - ill take this up with the servicer) and then stupidly (should of learnt from the past) bought a secondhand thinking i could go with 2 strobes or one for the girlfriend on her camera (olympus u-720). Anyway the second one also held no charge and and also doesnt sync with the camera in manual mode, so can only be used on a set strength mode, and is way too bright, had to stuff the diffuser with extra plastic bags!

Anyone else had problems with these flashes? However i love my epoque lenses so do still trust the brand so far as they go. Anyway basically the strobes have ruined a lot of dives on my 6 month tour of the Philippines.

And my questions is this which flashes work with which housings the best and why would anyone recommend them? i have read all the bumpf on each page and cant really decide. Things i do like are the rechargeable battery pack from inon but the price seems over the top for an extra battery, anyone doing a standard li-ion battery pack for a strobe?

I generally dive tropical (indo-pacific) waters and shoot macro

    Cheers for any help

    Olly

  2. Olly,

    Inon uses AA batteries.

I think it best for you to figure out what kind of shooting you'll be doing and the power requirements, then budget and also what housing for which camera.

Unfortunately there aren't too many unbiased reports on products. Your very open ended question will solicit answers from people who'll recommend what they are already using. Knowing what you want will be half the battle. Many strobes work with many different housings. Understand the strobe connections and pros and cons, and you'll be in a better position to choose.

    Good luck.

  3. Yeah sorry meant ikelite not inon
