What kind of damselfish?

  1. Can someone please help me ID these damselfish? The pics were shot at Phil Foster Park in West Palm Beach, FL.

    Thanks! :) Robyn

  3. Hi Robyn,

Given the angle of the fish in the photos it's not easy to tell which species it is exactly, but it is either a Cocoa damselfish (Stegastes variabilis) or a Beaugregory (Stegastes leucostictus). Given the dark diagonal lines (made by the dark scale edge) on the side of the body and the small blue spots under the eye, I'd lean towards it being a Cocoa damselfish. Do you have any other photos that might show the fish a little better?

    Hope that helps.

  4. Thanks for your help Gary and Lee. Here's a few more shots:

  5. I'd have to say Lee is right. Probably a transitional Cocoa from early Juvenile to late Juvenile?
