Ball screw for Aquatica Handles

  1. Hi all,

I have just recently made the big plunge into getting my first underwater DSLR housing, a second-hand Aquatica D200 housing.

I read that I will need the ULCS system (re:f BA-AQW) fix ball screw to attach to the handle.

    source (http://www.ulcs.com/gshousings.html)

However, I have also found a seller on ebay that is selling a similar item :

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Underwater-Camera-Stro...2#ht_2119wt_941

They look the same in picture.

However I am not familiar with the screw specifications (M5, M6, etc) used by Aqautica handles and is afraid to get it wrong.

Can any members kindly point me out in the right direction?

  2. Write to Terry or Dave at ULCS; they will help you.

  3. give aquatica a call - they will know best... but they are imperial screws, standard 1/4" x 20

i will chime in and say they do have a better system for attaching a ball to the handles, albeit more expensive than $9 on that ebay page. its basically a base plate that screws to the handles, then a ball joint with a dovetail base that slides into the plate and tightens on with a screw knob. sounds more complicated, but makes adding and removing strobe arms to the housing very quick and easy, without having to un-clamp the ball joints which is always awkward. and i do find the ability to quickly remove the arms helpful - sometimes taking them off to handhold the strobe & arm UW for different placement, putting the camera in a small rinse bucket after a dive etc.

and if you do decide to get arms from them, i'd avoid the arm sections that attach directly to the strobes, you really do need to have a ball joint at the strobe to adjust the strobe relative to the arm. i had to buy a ULCS ball joint to attach to the strobe, so i have a combo of TLC (aquatica's arms) and ULCS which do work fine together. i prefer aquatica's clamps. cheers,

  4. We use 1/4" -20 mounting holes on our grips (same size as a tripod screw BTW). you can mount either the Ultra light or the TLC (#17553) base with 1" ball to the grip or do like Undertow suggest, get a dove tail #17550, a lower section #17657 and a knob 17750 then this will enable you to remove the strobe arm rapidly. below is a link to the TLC reference map.

  5. Thanks , okuma, Undertow and Viz'art

I didn't know that the the dove tail exist. And thanks to Undertow for the advice on "avoiding the arm sections that attach directly to the strobes". It was difficult to know that this difficulty might occur without have the actual arms.

I will probably get the dove tail configuration.

    Cheers all. ;)
