What sort of camera case should I buy?

  1. Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a big , secure camera case to take on board planes.

    Whats everyone using these days?

I'm carrying one Ikelite SLR and strobe set + a few lens and 2 different ports.

    Cheers

  2. how secure? pelican secure? i use a Kata cc-195 and its solid. not quite as solid as a pelican, but way lighter. just barely carry on size. its designed for big vidoe cameras but the shape means that it'll fit a housing, dome & strobes upright instead of laying flat. this makes the best use of the available space. its rigid and well padded. i would buy the extra customizable divider set kata sells to put enough tall dividers in for a full housing kit. though you can get away without it. cheers,

  3. Whatever you buy, Cal, you will never be entirely satisifed and will be looking for something else: it's one of the Laws of Photography.

I'm using a roller Pelican 1520: cabin-sized, heavy as hell but RUGGED. It's been excellent for very many long trips. I keep thinking about switching to a lighter, more inconspicuous, cheap, cabin-sized, roller suitcase and lining it out with padding. Then when I grimace trying to get 35kgs into the overhead locker it won't look quite so obvious!

  5. Nearly as bad as asking the Canon vs Nikon question !

FWIW if your travel goes the way of Europe then you need to be really aware of size and weight.

These days most everyone is trying to micro bill you for all aspects of travel and looking at the size and

weight of your hand held is no exception.

I have had success with the Tamrac range of bags. Least I can fit more into my Expedition 5 than the local

    cheap airline will let me!

  7. I use a LowePro AW200 to carry my gear on my back.

It holds laptop computer, two Z240's, Nexus D90 housing, ports, extensions, camera body and lenses.

I have room for a second body but do not own one so I carry my G9 in that space for now.

dive computer, ULCS arms and parts, battery charger, spare batteriers go in a standard carry-on roller.

    How do you do that.

By the time I've carefully interlaced an 8" dome, tray, strobes, arms, chargers, couple of lenses, body and the general spares in standard size carry on, there's no room for the housing.

That has to go in the suitcase stuffed with socks :)

This point is exactly why I bought Nexus. The ZP1017 dome for the tokina 10-17 is tiny, close to 4" size. Users claim that combination is every bit as sharp as an 8" dome from the competition...but I am too new with it to know.

The ZP1017 is close to the size of a macro port for a 60mm. And the housing is over a pound lighter than the competition and smaller in size.

It cost more to go Nexus and getting parts will be more trouble, etc...but I can carry it all with me on my back.

  10. I use a ThinkTank International backpack to carry my 8" dome, lens, dive computer, mask, chargers with wires, laptop and hard drives, and a Kata OC-84 roll-on to carry my housing with body and 70-180 mm lens inside with port attached, fisheye focus light, strobes and arms. The Kata is quite protective, lighter then a pelican and is larger inside then the pelican 1520.
