There are NO great whites in False Bay...

  1. There are NO great whites in False Bay... (at least that's what I tell myself when surfing!) It never ceases to amaze me that Cape Town is almost completely written off from a dive tourism point of view. Tourists coming to South Africa to dive generally spend time at Sodwana Bay or Aliwal Shoal and then come to Cape Town specifically to do a cage dive with the great whites. Very few (maybe 1% or less) of those same tourists ever do any other diving in Cape Town and they are definitely missing out. Sure the water is cold, but for the properly suited diver this is a world class diving destination. So what's got me waxing lyrical about our diving all of a sudden? Well I had an excellent day in the water yesterday and was simply reminded what a great place this is to dive. I dived at Batsata Rock and explored a little known reef which was an explosion of colour and then dived again a Pyramid Rock with the prehistoric looking sevengill cowsharks. Visibility 15m, Temp 16 deg C, no wind and no swell...

All pics above taken yesterday (Sunday 21/9/2009). Any of you coming to Cape Town and not diving will be found out and dealt with accordingly! More pics at Cape Town Gallery

  2. Great images, Jean! I had no idea Cape Town had so much diversity underwater. Don't worry, if I ever get to Cape Town, and it looks like I should... I'll dive. Promise!

  3. Sweet images!

  4. The 15-16°C water says it all Jean... it's cold! ;)

...and here I was using 16 deg C to boast about how warm it was, up from the usual 12 deg C !!! Oh well, dust off those drysuits...

  6. ^ I'd freeze up like a popsickle in that cold ;)

Really nice images. I like the last one the best. Something really special about that one.

  7. Love the images! I'm sold. My partner and I are expecting to be in that part of the world in March/April and though the original intention of the trip didn't involve diving, I have yet to do a trip where I didn't dive. Can you point me towards any resources that can provide answers to the 5W's?
