Diving in Sydney area ?

7 posts
  1. I'm going on business trip to Australia for two weeks from OCt 18 to Oct 31st. I want to spend weekend + one/two days diving near Sydney. What are the good options there ? Also does anyone know if it is possible to make it to Great White Shark diving in Adelaide area within this timeframe ?

I will appreciate advice of mighty community of Wetpixelians !

    Cheers, Alex

  3. I highly recommend Dive Centre Bondi on Bondi road. Knowledgeable and run by true dive professional that know the area very well. With less of a make money at all costs attitude that some franchise businesses have.

  4. Alex,

There is great shore and boat diving around Sydney, will depend on what you want to do or see. Botany Bay is great for shore diving (Kurnell and Bare Island) and weedy sea dragons reside at both places. Would recommend getting a hire car for more freedom.

Calypso Star Charters are running Great White Day Trips from Port Lincoln. We did two trips out with them in May and saw sharks both days. You could fly down one day, cage dive one day, fly back the next.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Nigel

  5. Do you know where you'll be staying? Will you be hiring a car?

There are some great dive spots around Sydney (as others have mentioned) but you need a car to get to them. I guess you'll need to hire dive gear, too.

I regularly dive with St George Underwater. They are doing a dive at "The Leap" on Saturday 24th. This is a great spot and you are likely to see weedy seadragons, cuttlefish and Port Jackson sharks.

  6. Reply maybe a bit late......but....with regard to South Australia, you are looking at a day lost traveling to and a day lost traveling from Sydney (2 flights, Sydney - Port Lincoln).

There are two primary operators, Rodney Fox and Calypso Star. last I heard Calypso were doing day trips but you would need to check with them if that still is the case, otherwise I believe the minimum are 3 or 4 days trips based on time of year?

Assuming your not after wrecks, the Sydney shore diving is light years ahead of the boat diving, this is Clifton Garden's in the harbour, http://vimeo.com/6831427 thats footage from 2 dives!! (above average viz) and as ATJ said anywhere around Kurnell is great, especially for the Weedy's. If you could hook up with anyone from St George Underwater (there is a shop of a similar name as the club), you would have a great stay.

Weather is bad in Sydney this week and set to remain for next week...hope its better by the time you get here!

    Cheers,

  7. Also, if your after macro, couple of hours north of Sydney (freeway most of the way) is Port Stephens (Nelson Bay is the main town); see DaveH's website, http://daveharasti.com/nelsonbay/divesites.htm or, you could head up to South West Rocks for some Grey Nurse Shark action; http://southwestrocksdive.com.au/ just over a 5 hour drive or take the train to Kempsey and they will pick you up.

Yeap, on contemplation, I'd be heading to SWR if I had 4 days or Nelson Bay if I had a couple.
