Tsunami hits Samoa and Tonga

3 posts
  1. Just heard that the tsunami that killed ~100 in the Samoas has also taken lives in Tonga. Looks like the damage was in the Niuas, the islands on the far northern edge of the kingdom. (The Niuas are actually closer to Samoa than to the rest of Tonga. )

Niuatoputapu is discussed in this article:

Does anyone know if Vava'u was affected? Karen?

  2. There are a few WP members in Tonga right now. Hope they are all ok.

  3. Hey All

Vava'u is fine and the WP members are mostly here, we had some very strong tidal surges that affected docks on resorts and a couple of small island boats, but the seas were calm and the whales settled after a day or so.

The Niuas has been very badly hit, 95% of all houses destroyed in Niuatoputapu, and 9 lives lost. Help is with them now and they are getting food supplies and medical help.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected in the Pacific by recent events.

    Best wishes to all

    Karen
