While I am looking at upgrading my wide angle lens for my G9 which costs quite a lot of money, I am also considering making the leap to dSLR(as someone put it here!) but sticking with Canon. I have an Ikelite DS125 strobe already so would just need an ikelite housing to suit a Canon dSLR...thing is which dSLR? and what advantages would you say I would get with it? Of course my pockets arent that deep! but which one would be the best value for money, so not necessarily the cheapest. I think I may have a bit of a problem with not having live preview as I have a little blindspot in my right eye (I'm going out this afetrnoon to take some photos with my G9 without using live preview to see how I really manage!)
...and of course choice of lenses & ports would be handy to know too please if you could I've seen so much about the tokina fisheye 10-17 so thats one lens chosen.
Once I have my dream shopping list I will ad it all up and go from there!
Cheers
Woody
Could you give an indication of what range 'not too dear' is in Woody? Or will you make the budget fit the suggestions?
Hi Mu,
All depends on the VFM factor ...I dont think I'm willing to spend two and a half grand for a 5D but I think I could go a bit higher than £350 for a 1000D dpeending on what I would get? get me!?
mr Scubysnaps! I reckon going by DP review the 500D may be a good option for you...I may be wrong tho! I wouldnt know where you would be best going for a good package deal tho
Well my dear whenever you get one and whatever it is I shall come and have a play!
oo er missus!
I'm booking myself onto one of these courses, perhaps theres one in your area too? bit cheaper than coming all the way darn carf from Manchester!
There's no doubt that if I were going the Canon DX route the 500D in an Aquatica would be the top of my list. But of course there's always the 5D MkII to haermorrage my Visa card just nad more...
But a word of caution here. Recently I've spoken with Kevin at Aquaphot and with CU and its their opinion that with Canon / Nikon useable Liveview is only just around the corner. Apparently it has been available on some Olympus models. So the advice is to wait a bit longer as the next models from Canon / Nikon should be catching up in this technology. Apparently, useable Liveview was a feature in the pre-release 350D but was detuned in the production version.

Thanks Tim.
I wasnt expecting it, but the 500D has it...you can view on the 3" LCD of what you are taking a picture of, I used it myself, is this something different you are ferring to?
Thanks Tim.

Sorry Paul, I didn't make myself clear. Yes, in common with all (?) DSLRs the 500D has Liveview, but when used the auto focus grab is very slow making it only 'useable' in a studio and not a feature to use u/w. But the technology is there and will be incorporated into future model releases. People who know better than me advise waiting a bit longer as they expect Canon to respond shortly.
Thanks Tim, I'd been advised by my friend Rinie to seriously consider the 50D as well, maybe older but not got movies which we all dont really need on an SLR, I'm going to compare the 2 tomorrow.
I dont think I can wait much longer!!!! and I probably couldnt afford the price of a brand new released one on the shelf
