What Subal flat port do I need: Marumi Achromat plus Nikon 105mm VR?

  1. Hi,

I would like to use the Marumi DHG Achromat Macro 200 and 330 with my Nikon 105mm VR. What Subal flat port do I need? As most of you Subal owners will know, the dedicated port for the Nikon 105mm VR is not long enough if you want to use a diopter. :(

This is where I bought the Marumi Macro 200 and 330: enjoyyourcamera.com

You can get it also here: microglobe.co.uk

Both Marumis add about 16mm to the length of the Nikon 105mm VR when screwed in

There are port extensions. They come in a wide variety of flavors but I think the 18 mm will work for the Marumi. It does on my Canon version.

  3. The best solution is to get your port extensions bored out by a couple of mm - then they are wide enough to take the 105mm VR comfortably.

The Subal 105mm VR port was designed to take the extra girth of the 105mm VR and if you put it on a standard extension ring it can be a tight squeese for the lens. It will go in, but it will be touching the side of the port, which is not ideal.

I use the 105mm VR with the same port I use for the 60mm, with a bored out extention ring (40mm?) behind it. This allows me to use the 105mm with a variety of dioptres. For example yesterday I was shooting it with the Canon 500D dioptre, which looks a similar thickness to the Marumis, you have.

This also means for travel - you take only one flat port for the two lenses.

    Hope that this helps,

  4. Hi Alex,

I already thought about using port extensions, but I wasn't sure if this is safe enough, because of the additional o-ring.

I am using the Subal ND700 with the type 4 opening, so the needed port extension (also type 4 of course) should be big enough for the Nikon 105mm VR, I guess. I already own a flat port for the Nikon 60mm af-s which fits the Nikon 105mm VR - too short, but otherwise ok. I think you bought the Subal ND700 with the type 3 opening, because you wanted to use older ports (just guessing)? I am just hoping that I don't need a modified port extension. - Anyway, I really like the idea to travel with just a little port extension and a small flat port in the future and still be able to use two lenses plus diopters. :(

  5. Hi Sebastian,

I, like Alex, have type 3 ports "rebored" to accomodate the wide Nikon lenses. With the type 4 you should not need to do this.

I use the standard flat 60mm port, (FP-FC60) and add extensions to cover additional lengths of lens. I think (!) my extension for the 105VR is a 32mm one (but may be wrong)

You can figure out what additional length you need by measuring the actual length of your 60mm lens, and then measuring your 105 + diopters, subtracting one from the other, and that length is what you need to make up in extensions.

The drawback as you point out, is the additional o rings, but in general, the Subal port system is very good. Watch out for boat crew handing you the housing by the port, and for very shallow dives, where there is less pressure to "force" the seal and keep it twisted shut.

    Hope that helps

In the type 3 port system Subal made two lengths of 60mm port - one with room for a dioptre, one not. I had both for a while, one has a new home now!

You housing has about 60 o rings - so I wouldn't worry about adding another.

    I haven't used a dedicated 105mm port for years.

  7. Hi,

many thanks for all the answers! :(

Now I know what to buy next to use my Marumis under water.

I can see where this would be a great solution. I currently own the 105VR Subal port. Since I have both the Niikon 5T and 6T close up lenses, and would like to use one or both with the 105mm lens, I can see I will need a port extension bored out.

Does anyone know who I should go to for this kind of work (i.e. boring out a port extension)?

If I get it done now, it will be ready for Alex's workshop in Grand Cayman in January 2010 :P

  9. Hi Ellen,

Any small machine shop should be able to do this - I could do it but am too far away to be useful to you.

Ask around - basically anyone who is a hobby machinist / gunsmith is the kind of guy you are looking for.

    Paul,

Thanks for giving me a starting point. I would not have had a clue who I would contact for this type of work.

I do appreciate your kind offer though!

  11. I took mine (and Alex's) to my local engineering works. It took them about 5 minutes!

If you are stuck, send them over, I'll get it done and send 'em back!

    All the best

Tillamook Precision Machine can do it easily if they are close enough for you.
