First Day with Nexus/D90

  1. I was anxious to try the u/w upgrade from G9/OEM to D90/Nexus with Tokina 10-17. I had only 2 days for diving in North Carolina. Here are the first days results. Comments are welcome, positive or otherwise.

    Strobe settings were manual.

Steve Williams told me I would love the new system. How right you are, Steve. Everyone loves it but the checkbook.

    First day, first dive

I cannot decide if the fish in the lower left add to the photo or are distracting. What do you think?

    First day, second dive

This was the shot I was planning/hoping/dreaming when going there...and the bait fish made it better than I had hoped. Only one shark really cooperated in swimming over me or allowing me to get under them. So here she is.

    First day, second dive

2 things I liked about this photo, the detail of the teeth and the bloodvessel detail in the dorsal fin.

The background wreck is the Shurz.

I have yet to figure out how to post images from my smugmug site to here so I used link posting.

  2. Glad your enjoying the new system Dave. :( I really like the second Sand Tiger shot, nicely lit. Don't worry about the checkbook, it can't feel a thing.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  3. Great to see that you've got in the salt water with the new rig Dave. I should be joining you this weekend in the ocean but

I'll be starting at the easier end with the 60mm lens for now. Can't remember, which port did you get for the Tokina?

Love the 1st Sand Tiger image, the bait fish do add a lovely arc to the image.

    Cheers,

Thank you for the kind comments.

I am using the FP1017, designed for the tokina 10-17. Its small and light and like the results so far...but have only 4 dives that were short due to the 120 ft depth.

BUT, wondering if I will someday want a 10-24 or 12-24 and a dome for it.

Not bought a 60mm yet but do have a 105 micro and port for it for use on the next trip. considering whether to get the 2.6D 60 or the new AFS 60. My ports match the 'D' lens so it allows closer working but the AFS is faster focus.

    Which are u using?

    Hi Dave,

I have the newer AF-S version and it is an amazing lens. I haven't handled the older one so can't compare between the two with any personal experiences. One clear

difference between the two is the new one has internal focusing so won't extend allowing for a tight port fit. Also I believe the new one has not only improved but 'silent' focusing.

I'm sure if you do a search here on 60mm you'll find plenty more comparisons. I should be posting some pics from it here in the near future.

    Cheers,

    Jim.

What port are you using for the AFS 60mm?

I have the MP60-6 which is a good fit for the older 'D' lens but the AFS lens sits ~ 20mm inside it, reducing the working distance for a set magnification....or reducing the magnification for the set distance from the port.

  7. Nice to see a new Nexu-phile, and the sand-tiger overhead is a nice image.

The optics ot the 12-24 dome don't quite work: it still has soft edges, though the dome works very well with a 10.5mm and teleconverter! And, using an extension, with a 17-55mm!!

I have no trouble with the old 60mm, used in AF with a simple flat port. I have more trouble with the 105mm, and would prefer the option of MF with that lens.
