Very pretty, Chris!
A couple of questions:
1. Were you strobing the underwater portion?
2. What did you focus on? The topside looks a little soft, so I assume you were focusing underwater.
3. Aperture?
yes, the strobe was underwater, and i focussed underwater. It was f16.
For the digital manip part, I loaded the image from the camera in adobe camera raw, white balanced the underwater sand, and adjusted exposure.
I then did image->mode->88bits, select all, and "copy" and closed the window.
I then loaded it again in camera raw, and exposed the sky properly. I then converted to 8 bits, did a "paste" so that I had both images in separate layers.
I then added a layer mask, and roughly set it to separate the over/under portions, and gaussian-blurred the layer mask to soften the boundary between above and under water.
Thanks, Chris.
Question for anyone who knows a lot more about this than I do: I have seen over/under posts that looked very sharp both above and below water. What's the secret to this? I'm clueless.
Thanks, PauP! It looks like a superb article. I also downloaded and installed the DOF software. Another question: Using a lens in the D100 (with its digital cropping factor), would I still use the lens' nominal 35mm focal length in the charts?
