Worth getting a second strobe?

  1. I think I already know the answer to my question, but I'll throw it out to hear your opinions anyway.

    Background:

I am an avid topside photographer, but when I made the jump to underwater photography I was baffled by the number of choices. So for learning purposes and to buy some time I went with a relatively cheap point-and-shoot Sea & Sea DX8000G with a single YS-90 strobe. Someday I will move up to an SLR.

    Question:

Is it worth adding a second strobe at this point? I guess at this point getting a second strobe with a S&S would like putting racing tires on a Pinto... But I'm a bit frustrated with the limited amount of light available with only one strobe.

If it's not a bad idea to get a second strobe, I'd like something that I could use with an SLR when I upgrade.

    Let the flogging begin.

  2. When You are sure that You will move up to SLR then I think You can defenetly invest in a good flash. Because when You make the jump You need a good flash anyway, so why not buy it now and practice a bit more with Your S&S.

I have a P&S G9 and one Ikelite DS-160 strobe and I will probably buy another DS-160 before moving up to DSLR.

    Hope this helps.

  3. A couple of years ago I upgraded from a 8000G to G9.

While using the 8000G I fitted a couple of Sea & Sea YS-25's which gave very adequate coverage of the Sea & Sea wide angle adapter and good modelling illumination when shooting macro. I progressively lengthened the loc-line strobe arms to around 15 'bobbles' which also helped especially when positioning the strobes for portrait shots.

Of course the YS-25s are vitually redundant now I have a G9 and a couple of Z-240's but I expect you'll get better use from a couple of YS-90's when you eventually upgrade your camera.
