Canon HFS-11 and RA-V1 **LANC** adapter...

7 posts
  1. So I just stumbled across the information that this latest of Canon's tiny AVCHD camcorders has an "advanced accessory hot-shoe" that accepts their RA-V1 LANC adapter. It looks like the functions *their* remotes support through this are pretty limited, and the RA-V1 is a lot bigger (taller) than one would like for housing purposes, but it still seems to me like the housing manufacturers would be all over this. Anyone have any news/insight/rumors about this? Am I excited over nothing?

  2. Except if you plan to use a generic housing , LANC seems useless in comparison to what you can do with infrared for the HF-S11. I have an Aditech housing for Canon and on the HF-S10, I can control everything (infrared board inside) and navigate in all menus.

I just was on ikelites website, and there housing will fit both the HF-S10 or the HF-S11. Would you know if Aditech's housing is alo interchangable

I am almost certain that all housings for the HF-S10 or S100 will accept the HF-S11. The HF-S11 has the same dimensions than the HF-S10. The Aditech housing also accept the HF-S11 (it's written on their website).

I have a couple of clips online with the aditech and Fathom WP80 lens:

  5. Scubacastor.....the image appears a bit soft to me on both clips and there looks to be some video noise on the first of the 2 you listed. Do you believe this is because of Youtube's compression or is it the HF S-10? I am not familar with the Canons, but I have been told there are several different modes in their menus, MX and some others. What are you shooting in? I was thinking of getting one as a back up cam so any impressions you have regarding the footage, ergonomics or anything else would be appreciated.

I am not a youtube guru yet for encoding and sending them HD video. I convert the AVCHD into a 1280x1024 wmv file with a relatively low bitrate (my pentium M at 1.5Ghz plays it without problem) so you already have some lower quality from what I get in the WMV file. I've used the MXP mode (highest quality) and 24p so far. The wreck scene was filmed at 170ft/51m. The scene with the fishes was filmed at around 100ft/30m. In fact, I don't know which settings would be the most appropriate underwater. No color correction were added.

My overal feeling however is that WB in auto works quite nicely. Manual balancing seems to work nice for macro work but pretty ineffective and maybe useless for wider scene. I need more test to confirm that. The 1.7x Telemacro mode works nicely even with the dome. Other than that, I have access to every function underwater on my housing but I can't switch from video to photo for example. I am still in the learning curve with that camcorder therefore I need more test before being able to tell more about it. I am however very pleased to have to the capability of accessing everything underwater.

  7. Hi Scuba,

Do you can provide (some seconds) of the original footage from S10 (*.m2v I supose) that you can send to me to evaluate the original Canon quality?

I am thinking to upgrade my HC3 to something better and Canon would be one choice.

    Thank you.
