International Ikelite housing maintenance dilemma

  1. Dear All,

I have owned my ikelite housing for 1 year. I use it nearly every week, if not multiple times a week. I have been looking after it like it was my own baby. I have been thinking lately to send it for a yearly maintenance service. What a better proof of love than a yearly maintenance service for my baby right? :)

The problem is that according to Ikelite, there is no Authorized Dealer who can provide that service apart from Ikelite in America. See I live in Indonesia, and just to send my housing to the US will cost me twice what I will also need to pay for the service. Doesn't sound right, does it? ;)

I did my research, sent a few email to different Ikelite dealers in Asia (Singapore and Taiwan), and one of them replied that he could provide a "general service". Well does that mean that we can also do a general service without sending it to the US, or maybe one of you guys does it himself ? I would be interested to hear what you do/did with you Ikelite housing when you did a regular maintenance service

    Cheers

    Daniel

  2. My philosophy: If it ain't broken, don't fix it

  3. Ikes are very easy to service yourself. Ike even supply service kits. Just pop a circlip, remove the control rod, clean and lube, replace the o-ring and reassemble. Easy and only half and evenings entertainment...

  4. timmoranuk is right.......It's not rocket science.....

Although I do recall hearing you shouldn't re-use the little e-clips but install a NEW one when changing or lubing the push button o-rings. I do.....

In between servicing intervals if a push button gets sticky here's what I tell my customers to do.....

Without the camera mounted put a teeny bit of Ikelite o-ring grease on a toothpick or plastic small stick and push each button in farther than it would normally go. As in farther than it would hit a camera button and stop. Then lubricate the shaft from the INSIDE.

Work the button in and out several times and voila' you just lubed the o-ring on your push buttons

    Good luck!

Yes, IIRC, the Ike service kits include replacement circlips (e-clips).

  6. Cheers guys. I feel relieved now that I needn't sent it to the US. Save me a lot of money that I could instead use for diving :)

I will get one of these service kits and do it myself. :)

    Cheers

Just make sure you do a dive with the empty housing (no camera) before you use it again...

  8. Will do. cheers
