Ike D700 or move to Subal ND2

  1. Hi,

    Maybe it's a stupid question...but it's mine.

I have an Ike D700 with 8" dome assembly, Sigma 15 FE, 60mm macro with flat port.

    On land I have also a D2X, 10.5 and 105VR.

    I want to travel to Africa, but I don't want a Dx0 anymore (no D90, D80 or D70).

Subal ND2 + D2X or Ike D700 + D700 seems to weight approx the same.

    I know it's a curious question.

What do you think about that?

ps : Is somebody has a picture with side by side, an Ike housing and Subal one?

  2. Although I don't have a side by side picture, I can tell you that the Subal is the same size (if not smaller) than the Ikelite. I have an ND2 and a friend of mine has an Ikelite for the D70, and the Ikelite is bigger and heavier. Having said that, didn't you just answer your own question when you said:

The D2x is a DX crop camera just like the D90, D80 and D70.

    You're right!

On land I want a FX!

I travel with 2 bodies. It's better if there are the same model. (backup)

So...need a housing for D700, can't afford Aquatica or Subal one... stay Ikelite!

I'm going to send mine for upgrade (4 locks).

    Thanks Rocha!

  4. Sell everything you have, but the D700. For the price you can get...

Buy a decent aluminum housing (can be Subal if you already have ports and stuff) and set you up properly with the D700 then.

    And good luck in Africa.

  5. Mariozi, where the earnings?

Aluminium housing is more attractive, sexy... but can you see it on pictures?

    I don't think.

In 2007 I was in Malawi (Africa) [you can see here : http://www.6klid.com/expo ]

with two D70 and one Ike housing. No problem!

I just want a better sensor! More bokeh (I love my lens wide open :))

Vigneting with the 8 dome port, affraid me before I try it (Topic FE for D700).

Alex Mustard says that it can also occurs on subal dome!

If one day, I have enough money, for sure I'll take an alumium housing...just for the look ;)

  6. Going aluminum isn't just about looks. It's tougher, better with condensation inside the housing, as well as having no reflection issues (unless you use the internal flash) and is small and easier to handle. Quite a few advantages which can affect the picture quality and location shooting. Looking at your site name, I'm assuming you shoot the cyclids in Lake Malawi? With a Fx, macro lens choice changes as you no longer have a cropped sensor's 1.5 to push your lens. So your 105 now has a POV of a 105 at FX instead of DX. Same goes for your telephoto lenses.

I'd also consider dumping Nikon for the Canon 5D MkII, especially if you have all DX lenses. You'll have to go buy FX lenses wideangle lenses anyhow. The AF isn't as good as the D700 but the resolution makes up for a lot and the details you'd get off the cyclids would be make you a happy man.
