Jellies & Seals

  1. Cape Town, SA: On Thursday I went to sea with Steve Benjamin (http://www.animalocean.co.za) and Charles Maxwell (http://www.underwatervideo.co.za) to try and get some shots of a Southern Right whale. Charles is probably the only person around to have a whale filming permit. Unfortunately the whales were not playing the game and failed to put in an appearance, but I ended up jumping in at Seal Island and had a ball playing with the seals. It was a great game to see how close I could get before they knew I was there. A few were sleeping floating on the surface and got a fright when the strobes fired. Their reactions were comical. I would say that life as a seal is pretty idyllic if only it were not for the GWs... I also got some nice shots of a red jellyfish which are far less common than there white cousins around here.

Temp was a balmy 12.5 deg C.... warm enough to forego the drysuit and use a 5mm wettie!
