Inon Z220 strobes

  1. Hi Craig,

Interested in learning a bit more about the Inon strobes you are using. What can you tell me about them? How do you like them compared to other brands (Ike, S&S etc). What can you tell me about their TTL function. Sea Optics specs page says "Both Nikon and Canon TTL systems built in." If true, I believe these to be the first to crack the code on E-TTL with canon or housed systems. (I have a canon 10d).

If I decide to go this route...where is the best place to purchase...A very quick web search reveals that MP Photo sells them for $695.00. Is that a good price?

As always...thanks to you and so many others for your help as I build my system.

  2. Whoa nelly. Canon TTL is NOT the same as Canon E-TTL.

Just like Nikon TTL is NOT the same as D-TTL.

  3. The Inon strobes do not do any digital TTL at all, neither Nikon nor Canon. They do conventional TTL and will work with the Fuji S2. There are differences in TTL between manufacturers of film cameras and that is what Inon is referring to.

As a moderate power strobe I think they are excellent. If you compare them to other AA-powered strobes they are the class of the field. Very small and light, good power, and great build quality. Compared to the DS125, they are close on power and much smaller and lighter. AA batteries give you greater flexibility at the cost of slower recycle times compared to the DS125. Still, recycles are quite fast. I personally feel I would only give up the Inons if I had to have a much more powerful strobe than 100 watt-seconds. Since Ike offers greater digital compatibility and external strobe controllers, the DS125 may appeal to you.

If you are looking for a Canon E-TTL strobe you won't find it in the Inon series. Otherwise, the Z220 is a terrific strobe.
