Sony NXCAM

Sony release NXCAM, 3 1/3 inch AVCHD, Solid state G lens, looks like a baby EX1

First Ive seen of it. Did some searching and no releases from Sony yet either. Will be interested to learn more about it.

Here is a link I saw, obviously from Sony Japan, translated via the g,

This was released as a prototype with final specs TBA. Can't say much except it's AVCHD 24mbps, using basically the same body as the Z5. I fear HDV days are really numbered now. This is basically a CMOS version of the Panasonic HMC150. The NDA's are pretty heavy now but Nige Cooper is the "official" word on this new camera.

I heard a stat the other day that at present with the AVCHD codec 9 mbs is equal to HDV's 25 mbs...Don't know how true it is though

Sony has a couple of videos on their U.S. Broadcast site.

MPEG4/H.264 is generally about twice as efficient as MPEG 2 HDV. That efficiency does not mean the picture will look as good 100% of the time but it'll look comparable at say 12-13mbps. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, sometimes the same. Depends on who is watching the clips

I dunno why Sony is trying to hype up the NXCAM when they haven't fixed the specs yet. I guess they've learnt a few things from RED. LOL

So true... just saw the announcement for Scarlet and that was another deal loss. I reckon people are starting to get a little over it!

Yeah I just read the Scarlet releases today...definitely getting tired of waiting for new releases only to be disappointed. When it comes out, it will be great...but the big if and WHEN becomes a PIA.

by my recollection, with the latest delay, Scarlet (if released in May/June) will be more than a year delayed?? (initial promise Spring 09). RED is good at getting hype, but I think they should start putting off announcements until they are further along in development.

Well it's sorta like the Segway. You build the hype and the rest will follow.

Game changers are few and far between. ViDSLR aren't what most expected in terms of quality but still it's made enough headlines working for web delivery. The NXCAM is catering to web and non-broadcast deliveries like Blu-Ray, much like the HMC-150.
