Fiber Optic for Bonica Strobe

  1. Hi Folks,

I've got a friend starting into uw photography, he's getting the Canon S50 in the DC-300 Canon plastic housing. He's got an old Bonica Neon strobe that has a side mounted slave trigger. Is there a source that he can go to to get some sort of fiber optic sync cord for this? Can he modify the one from Epoque?

    thanks!

    Stu

  2. Hey,

I have the exact same setup and I don't use fiber optic.

I built a bracket from aluminum to cover the camera flash and that also reflects the light up and triggers the Bonica strobe. I have great results.

  3. Thanks Vlad! I'll let my buddy know

  4. Hi Vlad,

How does the Bonica handle the preflash from the S50?

    thanks!

    s.

  5. It doesn't!

The preflash triggers the Bonica strobe so you have to disable the preflash.

What I do is that I have special settings for underwater in the C mode.

My settings are: Av, no red eye reduction, no preflash and set the flash level to the lowest.

The thing you have to know is that you HAVE to cover the camera's flash so you have to do something like tape over it or cover it with a bracket like I did. If you will not you will still get back scater.

  6. Thanks Vlad! I'll pass the info along, as I'm an SLR shooter, I had no clue about the P&S housings =)

  7. Yeah, rub it in my face will you :-))))

I would love to be an DSLR shooter too but I am not prepared to spen that much money yet.

I am getting great results wit the S50 and the Bonica strobe though.

  8. Hi Vlad

My buddy just got his camera and housing through B&H, he's a total photo newbie so I'm helping him out. How do you turn off the preflash in AV mode? I thought that only works in manual mode?

Can you email me a pic of your housing with the bracket? you can send it to: stewart.sy@final-frame.com

I didn't mean to bug you about the DSLR...I don't have a housing for my 10D yet, though I'm getting the Subal one most likely. I do shoot the Canon A2e in a Subal housing.

    thanks!

    Stu

  9. Sure,

    I'll send you a picture.

If you want I have even the dimensions for the bracket and I can add that to the email.

I'll take soem shots as soon as I'll get home.

...Maybe I'll make a photo equipment page on my website ... yes, that sounds even better.

You didn't bug me about the DSLR, I am just envious.

I have so start spending some money on my photo habits!

I used my bonica setup for about 3 years with great results but I needed something more.

About turning off the preflash if I remember you go in the menu and then you set the flash to manual. Of course you turn the red eye to off to.

  10. Vlad,

I would be interested in seeing that setup as well as I am also thinking of getting the cheap Bonica with my Canon S50 (the epoque DS150 died on me twice!)

That aluminium foil - do you put it in or outside the housing?

    Thanks!
