What’s the best glue to bond the stainless steel fittings on an ikelite housing

  1. Hi

The trigger lever for firing my d70 was leaking every so slightly the area around the thread in the Ikelite housing

Desperate measures where required I was on a safari boat in the Maldives I managed to seal the cracks (glue) around the thread and I managed to use the camera for the rest of the holiday but now I worry I will do more damage trying to unscrew and remove the fitting

I reckon my best bet is it to bond the fitting permanently in the hole. I have no need to remove it the actuating trigger and internal oring can be removed no problem with the fitting in the housing

I just need to bond the fitting in no leaks etc

    Any ideas thanks

    Hi David,

If your housing is still the old two port-lock style, I would recommend you would consider to have the new housing upgrade to 4-lock with the service special. You will have no worries about your current problems and others that may develop with an old housing.

I'm very happy I had mine done and basicly have a new housing for $200 with Ikelite pressure testing and guarantee.

  3. So you want to trust your camera, lens and possible thousands of dive trip $$ to a cheap tube of glue?

Glue is a good emergency patch.

Do it right and send it back to Ike and have it repaired/up graded correctly!

You need a glue that will

    1. stick to polycarbonate,

    2. stick to stainless steel,

    3. be thin enough to get into the crack,

    4. be flexible enough to account for the different thermal expansion of SST and PC,

    5. not degrade in direct tropical sunlight,

    6. not absorb water and swell up so much that it extends the crack.

    7. be able to withstand a 100 psi pressure differential.

Although some marine silicones might work for your purpose, I'd say sending the housing to Ike is much, much better choice.
