  1. I was curious as to if any of you travel with your camera in a seperate hard case from your normal carry on?

I was looking at the seahorse cases:

Seahorse SE-540F Protective Case - Seahorse Cases - Optical Ocean Sales Underwater Photo - 800-359-1295!

and was curious as to if the airlines would let me count this as my "personal item" in addition to my regular carry on. Do any of you have a second camera case, and if so, do you ever catch slack from the airlines? Mostly I would be looking at flying with continental (to Bonaire) and also use it locally on the boats here in NC (hence why I want a hard case for the camera). FWIW I use a nikon p5100 and z240 strobe, WA lense and macro lense

  2. The 'personal item' gestapo, especially since they now can start charging you for bags checked so there's a monetary incentive to them to be stricter, seems to me to be pretty rough on anything that doesn't look laptop-bag or purselike. That said, there's an awful lot of huge freaking laptop bags I've seen larger than the carryon I use for overnight clothing.

You might get away with more of a 'holster' type DSLR bag that holds the body and one lens as a personal item...something more like THIS. I've got an earlier generation of this and I have taken it as my 'only' camera bag with a carryon full of clothes for non-UW trips (wasn't bringing add'l body, lenses, etc, just wanted the camera with me 'just in case' an opportunity to go walkabout presented itself on business trips and the like).

I don't see a need for a separate camera case in general, unless you think you'll be carrying a lot of wet or salty stuff home and don't want the camera exposed to that (and even then - would just toss some big ziplocks into my bag to do the separation). My carryon is a Lowepro Vertex 300AW backpack, plenty big for 2 camera bodies (below pro size), housing, strobes and arms, chargers, etc. sans the handle/tray assembly and the big 8" dome, which have to be checked with the scuba gear. Haven't had a problem yet, although the 300 is "at the limit" for airline travel size (US, probably over in Europe - didn't see your location in a profile) and definitely over it if I pack a laptop into the sleeve as well. So the laptop becomes my personal item in a courier-type sling bag.

  3. I'd be curious how others travel with a full quiver of U/W DSLR gear. I have not traveled outside the US since the airline baggage restrictions have become tightened, but have a couple of trips planned to Mexico early next year. What are the general guidelines for dimensions and weight on a primary carry on bag and what is considered a personal item? Do I need to invest in a 'man purse'?

I'll be carrying two DSLR camera bodies, 4 lenses, housing, 8" dome port, macro port, two YS-250's, laptop, and all the essentials that go with it all.

Any hints from Wetpixel World travelers?

    Thanks!

  4. Hey Mike,

Which airline are you planning to use? It can make a difference as to the "international" limitations. Flying a US carrier I've never had to change up from what we'd normally do.

    Cheers,

    Steve

    Hey Steve,

American and US Airways is who I'll be flying with. I was thinking most Airlines follow the same basic carry on limits....last time I flew to Cayman (Digital Madness) I had no troubles, but I'm thinking times they are a changn'! Plus I have more CRAP to carry now!

So what is considered a personal item...will a backpack work or does it have to have a GUCCIE or D&B insignia on it?

    Gracias,

    Mike

  6. Thanks your your replies. The reason I want a second case is because I want a small hard case I can take on the boats here in North Carolina and also one that I can fly with to the carribbean. (mainly Bonaire on continental). I shoot a P&S (haven't bit the bullet yet for a DSLR - a ikelite case for nikon p5100 (pretty big for a P&S) and z240 strobe along with WA and macro lenses.

I think I am goning to go for the im2300

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5689...se_without.html

It is a just 3 linear inches larger than my lap top bag (w x l), and the same size a buddy of mine uses to fly with with no probs.

In the past I just used my regular carry on to take two sets of regs, camera gear, computer, and some clothes and it was def over the weight limit, but it was never weighed. I do like the idea of the hard case incase it is gate checked - which often happens - but if it is my personal item - that is not a worry.

I regularly fly the US carriers with a roll on bag (40 lbslimit but I've never seen them weighed) that fits in the overhead and a backpack with cameras, lenses, etc. International limitations have been lowered to 50 lbs ea. for the baggage. You should be fine as long as you remember to buy the rum once you get to the duty free.
