Baby eel?

  1. It's a jawfish that has been poked out of its hole.

  2. Difficult to see key features due to the angle but it looks like it may be a Jawfish - possibly a Brownblotch???? - see P289 of Reef Fish of Tropical Pacific. They normally live in holes and quickly retreat there but this one looks kind of rigid due to the light of your torch. I got shots of Brownblotch Jawfish in Lembeh a few weeks ago.

    Be interested in others' views.

  3. The back of this jawfish is dark, whereas the Brownblotch is pale and speckled with white (at least in my reference book). It looks like a juvenile or small species; there are lots of unscribed jawfish in the Indo-Pacific.

  4. Thanks for replying.

Here's another picture of this one.

I found it lying on the sand, with no holes nearby. :)

It moves little, and does not seem to be sensitive to light.
