housing options: Nikon P6000, Canon G11

  1. Anything besides Ikelite and the Canon-made housing for the G11?

I like to shoot in Manual mode with TTL flash using an external strobe.

And a sub-question: any significant differences in image quality between these two cameras?

And a sub- sub-question: anything else I should be looking at besides these two cameras for which there is a housing available which allows manual mode and TTL flash with an external strobe?

    THANKS! :)

Yes ... there's a FIX/Fisheye and probably a couple others like Patima ... not sure what's out, but check with one of the sponsors like Reef Photo or Backscatter ...

Not possible with a G-series Canon ... TTL flash control is not available in Manual ... not sure about the Nikon.

I would give a slight edge to the Canon from what I have seen ... Here's a comparison of the G10 and the Nikon ... the G11 is marginally better than the G10 - especially above ISO 80.

  3. Thanks for the great info, Jeremy!

No TTL in manual....wow.....that's really going to cramp my style..... :)

Yeah, it is sad. You end up using Aperture priority mode, and getting slow shutter speeds like 1/30 or 1/60, which blur motion too much.

I guess you could use Shutter priority, but it just seems weird to do that when shooting with a strobe... Probably work fine, come to think of it.

Um ... how about just using manual?

It isn't that hard ... TTL is over-rated in the digital age with instant feedback ... IMHO ...

If only we could get that tinkers butterfly to swim past the long nose hawk fish sitting on black coral, a few times, so we could get the exposure right when the composition is right!

My experience is that the composition for truly wonderful and unique photos is completely a one time, transient thing. You only get one shot.

If you are up in the surge zone, where the distance between you and subjects is changing dramatically, this is another area where TTL is a win.

I wish there were a "stupid" TTL, that just used the atual focus distance to put out the right amount of light. It would probably work better than the fancy ones. But there you are.

In my experience, it really only works well for macro anyway and I found it just as easy to use a manual setup with a little practice. Generally, I change the exposure infrequently and do my fine control with the strobes by moving them around and tweaking the power. I find the need to re-shoot more often to reposition strobes and get another angle than to change exposure ...

Don't get me wrong ... TTL can work very well in the right circumstances and sometimes increase the hit rate ... but with the instant feedback of the LCD screens, I find TTL much less useful than it was in the film days when you got no feedback.
