I've been bitten by the Sardine Run bug. I was lucky to go last year and even with all the trials and tribulations (http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31428) the couple good days (one spectacular in particular) made it all worthwhile. I'm dying to go back.
My previous trip was through Nic de Gersigny's SEAL operation. They were fantastic and I would gladly use them again - an outstanding operation with great people. On the other hand, I wasn't wild about the lodge - comfortable, but isolated and frankly the food SUCKED. Any other experiences, recommendations, or thoughts about operators, accommodations, etc. especially in and around Port St. Johns or other areas? Are there any others that even try to cater to the adventurous recreational (vs. pro) crowd? How does one set up something for a solo or maybe a small (4 person) group? Just looking to explore any and all options from those who've been there...
Thanks!
Phil
The food sucked? That's a little harsh Phil, seeing where Mboyti River lodge is, but I guess horses for courses. I've stayed there a few times, albeit a few years ago. What exactly are your expectations? Gordon Ramsay came one year for a few days. He did not concoct a sardine dish!
Wetpixel may organize a trip in 2011 ( or I should say I may organize a trip with the blessing of Eric) that has up to 4-5 people on board.
Hi Drew,
You have a a point - it's not like we passed any Whole Foods on the way there! Like I said, comfortable accommodations and there was plenty of cold beer at the end of the day, so perhaps I was a little harsh...
We got really lucky on our last day during this past trip which was 8 days on the water and I'd like to have a couple shots at something like that again. I'm thinking maybe 2 weeks there this time around? It was my one and only time, so I can't compare it to anything else and I know it's hit and miss even in "good" years - another group at the lodge was there for 9 days and didn't even launch for 5 of those. Even though it's almost 18 months away at this point, I'd thought I'd throw it out there. Please keep me in mind if you put something together
Thanks,
Phil
Phil,
Did you see the recent post about the new liveaboard "Extraordinary Expeditions" for the Sardine Run? Looks pretty cool to me.
I'm signed up with DPG Jason Heller for 2011 staying/diving with Mboyti River Lodge..don't know what to expect, but crappy food and good brew is what I'm used to.
Good luck and keep us informed.
Mike
You can add 4 more divers to that list for the SARDINE RUN in 2011.....A friend of mine lives in SA and he is looking into it as well....heading to Indonesia in May for 3 weeks 2 of which will be aboard the DAMAI. First time on this liveaboard, has anyone been on her before??
