Filters - came with lens kit - any usefulness - help

4 posts
  1. Hey guys - My new Sigma 17-70mm lens came today - YEAH!. Been out in the snow taking a few pics since I got home.

It came with a few goodies - including a 72mm filter kit. Made by Zeiko. Includes UV filter, CPL filter and flourescent filter. Are they of any use underwater? If so, how.

Thanks for answering what seems like a simple question - DiverPam

    Hi Pam,

Congrats. on your new rig. I do not recommend any of your filter kit for underwater use. The polarizer is the one filter that you can really use for topside work. The UV one is good for keeping thumb prints off the more expensive front element of your lens. In general, I’d say most photographers will recommend not adding any extra glass between the lens and the subject unless required or an effect is desired. You may want to search for older post on filter use u/w and Magic Filter. Dr. Alex Mustard is an excellent source. Link to his site: Dr. Alex You might want to wait on exploring filters for u/w and get some practice.

I am not familiar with the Zeikos filters. I prefer Hoya and B+W.

Thanks for the reply. I have been taking photos UW for about 10 years. Just for fun in the beginning. Just moved up to DSLR this year. Have not ever worked with filters before, Reading all of the threads on here about filters, I have not seen these mentioned. So...thanks, that helps.

The Zeiko brand is what was sent with my Sigma lens kit. I tried the UV filter in the snow and could not see any change in the pics really.

Will not add this to the dive equipment bag.

    Thanks - DiverPam

Your UV filter is probably your most useful one, since it does nothing but protect your lens topside (especially in snow and salt). Are these filters multi-coated? If they are not, they may actually add flare, chromatic aberrations, etc. and make things worse on a digital camera. I always have coated protective filters on my lenses, but they come off before going into a housing.
