  1. Anyone using the new DS161 or had the upgrade done on the DS160?

As I understand, the modeling light has been upgraded to provide 3X the lumen output. Wondering if the upgrade makes for a viable video light and if it's worth the extra coin.

I'm happy with the 160's and the modeling light is "okay" enough to leave my dive light on the boat, but for shooting video not so good.

I had this same question and contacted Reef Photo. As I understand it, the problem is that with the Nikon System, the video defaults to f/2.8 meaning the DS-161's would have no where near enough light to make an impact on video. With the D90 or D300s, you'd should shoot video with available light.

We got into way more technical discussions than I could comprehend, but bottom line is ... I am ordering the DS-160's as they are what I need for shooting stills, and provide little advantage for shooting wide angle or even macro video.

Give them or another dealer a call ... or someone more knowledgeable ... please chime in here.

    Hope this helps ...

I am confused. If the video defaults to f/2.8 then why would the light not be bright enough to make an impact? Is it that at f/2.8 the available light is more than enough, if that were true wouldn't it matter how deep you were?

    Confused

I'm so sorry!!!! f/22, not f/2.8. You are right, that did not make sense. If you could set the DOF on the video, the DS-161's would be a viable option. This info was told via phone while I was at work. I have not investigated the video specs of either camera. So I am hoping someone that has used the video function can chime in.

    I know that didn't help! :)
