Tokina 10-17 on Canon 1Dmk4 or 1Dmk3?

  1. Hello folks.

Just wondering if anyone has tried mounting the Tokina 10-17 on 1.3 crop Canon DSLRs, specifically 1Dmk4/1Dmk3/1Dmk2n ???

I'm wondering if there's any danger mounting this lens on this camera?

    Cheers,

    Brandon Cole

  2. well, vigneting. You want to try it on a 1.4 TC.

OR, wait for the new 15-24 fisheye that might come out, APS. Rumors, but make sense.

    :)

  3. Hi Brandon,

    Long time no see.

I used to mount the Tokina 12-24DX lens (meant for APS-C cameras) on my 1DmkII and had no problems (except some vignetting). I say go for it!

    Cheers

  4. Thanks your replies, gang. Appreciate it.

I fully realize that there would be vignetting, of course. I was worried about the back of the lens hitting the mirror box or the like.

I can't read Eric's report right now.... something wrong with the link... I'll try and find it. Thank you!

RE using it with the 1.4x. No thanks. I tried this a couple years back with the 1DsMk2 and 1DsMk3 and though the resulting quality, or lack thereof, was unacceptable. And I tried 3 TCs, both Kenko and Tamron.

RE the rumored 15-24. Yeah, I heard about that too. Interesting. But I won't hold my breath right now. I have a 1Dmk4 now, and though I sold my tok 10-17 a while back I can get one now, and I have a trip coming up.

And if this 15-24 is APS, you think it will be 180 fisheye? I'd don't think so, though I'd love to be proven wrong. Nikon needed 10.5 to achieve 180 degrees with their APS lens, and Tokina 10mm with theirs. I'm no optical whiz, but I wouldn't think a 15mm APS would result in 180 degrees.

    Thanks again for your ideas!

Eric did exactly this when he reviewed the Sea & Sea housing for the 1DsMk3 and 1DMk3 the link is http://wetpixel.com/i.php/full/sea-sea-mdx...sing-review/P3/

    Check it Out

  5. Reconstructed the link to Eric's test, and it sounds like the lens worked fine from 17mm down to 13mm, with just a hint of vignetting at 12mm.

I guess this means lots more vignetting at 11mm and 10mm...

Humm... Might be worth an experiment.

    Thanks again guys!

why not, canon 15mm and Sigma 15mm are 180° on APS.

    let's hope :)

  7. Which 15-24 are you talking about the one that was recently on canon rumors????

  8. Yes, the 15-24 mentioned on Canon Rumors. They showed a patent application for the design. But of course this doesn't mean that such a lens exists in the flesh, or will be available anytime soon.

  9. >>>why not, canon 15mm and Sigma 15mm are 180° on APS.

No, those lenses are 180 degrees on full frame. On APS C, they are much narrower.... like 100 or thereabouts. A great perspective, but not full frame fisheye

To the best of my knowledge, only 180 degree solutions on APS C are 10.5 Nikon, Tokina 10-17.

    I don't think there's any such 180 degree lens for APS H (Canon's 1.3 crop on 1D series).

    Brandon

  10. Yeah APS-H is sorta like the halfway house of cameras. What about the Sigma 12-24... it's a 16-32 in APS-H. You just gotta find a good copy. I think at 20+ mp it shows the age of the design but it's actually ok at 16-17.

  11. No, those lenses are 180 degrees on full frame.

yeah that's what I wanted to mean sorry.

Just buy a full frame man. wait for the 3D.

    :)

You also have the sigma 10mm http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_al...amp;navigator=6 with a very good/short minimum focus distance.

I just tried the tokina (in a nikon) with a 12mm ext tube to see if it could be an answer for your 1.3 crop fisheye need without adding anymore glass, but it does not focus (not even manually, the sensor plane is too far).

  13. >>>>yeah that's what I wanted to mean sorry.

I already have full frame- 1Dsmk3. I've been shooting full frame, 1.3x, and 1.5x/1.6x underwater for many years.

What I'm hoping for, and I'm sure I'm not alone, is a superwide zoom for full frame and 1.3. Wider than the 16-35 II, which I have and use when necessary. Nothing on full frame (or1.3x) comes close to the 10-17 (on APSC) in terms of flexibility as a super wide.

Yes, I forget to mention this one. Thank you. Newer arrival to the game. But still a fixed lens.

Hi Drew. Thanks for this idea. I had forgotten about that lens. I used to have it and used it occasionally on 1DII and 1DsII, but sold it when I went to the III cameras. 21mp was not kind. Actually, it can be a very sharp lens, as you say. But IMO it was not a great performer underwater on 21mp. Everybody has different tastes and needs, and what I want is something like the Tok 10-17 (in terms of range) for the full frame and 1.3x. The Tok is not perfect on 1.5x, but it's range is super nice. I still have a Nikd300 setup and keep it just because of the 10-17 lens. But I don't use it very often. Almost always shoot the full and 1.3 systems. I simply want 180 to 100 degrees, or 140 to 80 degrees, or something like that, ON A 1 SERIES BODY.

As you said it might be OK again on the 16mp new 1D4, but I don't know if I want to play the Sigma lottery again in terms of buying multiple lenses and testing them. I did that for many Sigmas, and now just wish these bozo manufacturers could actually take care of the testing and quality control themselves...

    Dachin-

Thanks for testing this. I hadn't thought about this clever strategy.

    But alas, I want AF....
