Bahamas - Nassau diving

  1. Quick preface - I go to Nassau regularly on business, have never dived there.

I know Stuarts Cove does some shark dives (i am not too keen on diving with them) but I was looking at some options that may enable me to do Tiger Beach with an operator that people say are good!

If it means I have to travel up to Grand Bahama thats fine, but a boat from Nassau would be great.

Thats being said .. if you were in the Nassau area (paradise island) who would you go diving with and what dives would you want to do?

  2. Well having been diving in both locations during the month of December I suggest in Nassau - Diving with Stuart Coves - If you feel you are not getting good service, speak with Stuart. He is on the dock daily along with Michelle. I have never had a problem.

As far as diving Tiger Beach, the location is closer to Grand Bahamas than Nassau. Still a little ways away from there too. Tiger Beach is best visited by liveaboard. Jim Abernethy has a service which departs from W. Palm Beach. I plan to take a group in June if you are interested. This trip is for 6 days, There are a couple more services but I suggest Jim Abernethy and the Shearwater, I promise you will see lots of sharks and get the best opportunity to get that cover shot!

  3. Not interested in live aboard especially not one leaving from Florida.

was just interested to know if it was a possibility.

Has anyone dived with anyone else other than Stuarts Cove? I would like to hear about other operators that are a good day out.

  4. Hi Giles,

If you don't mind getting up to Freeport, check out http://www.unexso.com/ They did a decent job with us, but that was about 8 years ago.

I'm not sure how doable Tiger Beach is going to be from your position, good luck.

  5. Getting to Freeport is fairly easy ... i just don't see the need to have to go on a live aboard to do the Bahamas .. but it may be the only option to do it right.

... will have a dig around when I am there this weekend.

  6. Giles,

I think if you want to do sharks, the best way is on a liveaboard like the Shearwater. I've tried to research land based shark action in the Bahamas and have really come up with Stuart's Cove for Caribbean Reef and Bimini for Lemons, and I've done both over the years. Walker's Key is presently shut down.

Stuart's Cove is a pretty well run operation, but pretty touristy. Seems like the Bahamas is so spread out that to really get a good experience a liveaboard works better unless you just want to dive for a day or so. I'll be really interested to hear if you come up with anything else, because it would be nice to be able to pop over for a weekend more, rather than having to commit to a week liveaboard every time.

  7. that my thing is i don't have a week to commit to a boat .. but i can definitely do a couple of days every other month when I am over there anyway.

I think I will start out with some Nassau local stuff .. see how it goes and then plan some other stuff.

  8. Giles, It's also because the sharks don't appear instantly after the boat anchors :-) It takes up to a day or two sometimes - in which case a day boat wouldn't cut it.

    Cheers

    James

  9. Thats good to know James .. I am basically just looking for options of things to do while I am having to go spend time in Nassau .. liveaboard is not an option, unless planned as a completely separate thing.

Hoping to learn a bit more about Nassau and out island diving this coming weekend .. will do my research !
