G11 Strobe for Work & Play

3 posts
  1. Aloha!

I have the Canon G11 with the Canon housing. The primary use for the camera is taking underwater pics of beginner divers in 5-10m of water - mostly sunny, but sometimes cloudy.

I want a strobe for work & for play taking marine life pics.

Work pics are typically of divers at a distance of anywhere from 1m to 3.5m - Will a strobe help in this range?

Play, of course I want to get great pics in a variety of diving depths, areas, and styles.

    I'm obviously a total noob :) and I'm weighing 2 options - S&S ys 110a ($750) or the S&S ys 27dx ($315)

What is all this TTL stuff (I just don't understand it at all) and will it work on my G11 with the Canon housing???

If it will work with my camera and housing, does it make my life easier for work pics, macro pics or both???

I obviously want a good strobe that will get the job done, but it is a substantial price difference.

Any help helping to remove this total fog that I'm in would be greatly appreciated.

    Mahalo & Aloha!!!

  2. Aloha,

    take into consideration the Inon strobe line as well;

    INON S-2000 guide number 20 ... very compact ... from US$ 450

    INON D-2000 guide number 20 ... compact ... from US$ 500

INON Z-240 guide number 24 compact ... can also be operated via electrical cord ... from US$ 670

I have use both an INON D-2000 and an INON Z-240 with my Canon G9 & Canon housing and I have been quite pleased with the results; now I use both with a Canon EOS-450D & Hugyfot housing and I am still very happy: no dedicated battery packs (operated with AA battery), very light and compact to travel with !!!

    Happy shopping ..... Francesco

  3. I've gone for the YS110a option with my G11 also with the fibre optic connection.

On land, it works perfectly - I get consistent exposures regardless of the subject as long as I am not in M mode (manual) as it is not supported.

Cant tell you how good it works underwater yet but I am off for 2 weeks at the weekend and can let you know then!

I chose the S&S 110a because in the UK the Inon z240 is really expensive - $1200 (£750)....

Have a look at http://www.digitaldiver.net/strobes.php to see the specs of each strobe
