Zoom gear info for Aquatica/Tokina 10-17/Tele 1.4 for Wide Angle Macro

  1. So like many interested in trying Wide Angle Macro using the Tokina 10-17 with a 1.4 teleconverter behind a "compact dome". But when saw others (Nikon/Aquatica users) do it they lost the zoom function due to not knowing what zoom gears to use. Emailed Aquatica and they got right back to me. Set this up in my basement and seems to work. So here is the text from Aquatica.

..."I pulled out my converter, Tokina and D300s and indeed the 18696 for the Nikon 12-24mm, 10-24mm & 18-70mm will do the trick for Nikon user, the 18706 for the Canon 10-22mm will do the same for Canon user. As for extension I recommend the one used for the Nikon 105mm VR and Canon 100mmm USM, the 18453 (or try the 18462 if you happen to have that one on hand, it might be a tad long, unfortunately I did not have my housing ready (D300s) for trying this, but just setting up the kit on the kitchen table will let you know if it vignettes or not, I doubt it, but until proven…). The gear is a tad loose so careful tightening of the set screws is mandatory as will be the proper positioning. Unfortunately we cannot create a new gear design just for this combination, well I guess we could but it would be really costly due to low volume. But for the records it works and gets the job done.

So for the Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye Zoom with the Kenko (or Tamron) 1.4x Tele converter the recommendation is

ZOOM GEAR: 18696 (Nikon housing) or 18702 (Canon housing)

EXTENSION RING 18453: same used with Nikon 105mm VR (and on some older housing with the older 105mm AF-D) and the Canon 100mm Macro USM"

  2. Thanks for posting this information. As I have this lens, extension ring, and zoom gear already, I just might have to investigate getting the 6" dome and the 1.4 teleconverter. My main question/confusion lies with Aquatica's suggestion of "tightening of the set screws is mandatory". My 18696 gear for my 12-24mm has two o-ring grooves for staying in place on that lens, but no set screws whatsoever. I haven't tried putting it on my Tokina 10-17mm to see how loose it is. Maybe the Canon 18702 has set screws. Any further clarification on this would be appreciated. Thanks again!

  3. Hi Jim. you should have 6 small set screws around where the O-rings are located, it is also possible that you have the earlier version of that lens, this one I'm not sure if it will work

check the attached drawing I did to show both version

  4. Thanks Jean. Yes, I have the older version of the zoom gear based on the image you uploaded. Looks like B&H still lists that image as what they sell as well. Any upgrades available if I send my old one to you directly? :P

  5. Hi Jim, you have the older version that works fine on the 12-24mm, the newer version is different in design as it will work with the Nikon 18-70mm, early 16-85mm and Canon 10-22mm and now the new Nikon 10-24mm as well as the Tokina 10-17mm + 1.4x converter.

I'm affraid that I don't have much use for your gear, I would put it up on the classified section and sell it as a 12-24mm xoom gear (that will fit the Nikon 10-24mm also)

B&H has generic images (if you go on our web site, there is not even a picture of any the gear just a representavive group shot)

I noticed a small mistake I did in my reply to NWDiver, the correct gear is the 18706 and not the 18702, BUT for your info we should have a dedicated gear for this combination soon its part number will be # 18731 (again used with the 18453 extension), this gear will have a better fit than these makeshift adaptations.
