Saturday was the date for the Mavericks surf contest. This is usually a really, really bad sign for diving but we decided to be stubborn and went diving anyway, waves be damned. At least it wasn't windy. We motored all the way down the coast to Yankee Point before deciding that diving there wasn't the best idea. We chickened out back to Carmel Bay and then again back to Monterey Bay where we dove a reef near the Mile Buoy. This spot was relatively protected by the Monterey Peninsula from the West swell but even at 140 feet it was really stirred up. Visibility on the bottom was in the 3-5 foot range. The decompression, on the other hand was really fun as from 70 feet to the surface the water was a clear blue and filled with Sea Nettles. We liked the decompression so much we basically did it again for a second dive. Link to full gallery below.
