  1. Will some one post a link to the recent finning here?

  2. Thanks for the reminder. I got an email about it from WWF Ph 13 days ago but was too busy to post it. They are offering a reward of PHP 100,000 for information leading to the capture of the culprits. Whalesharks are protected species in the Philippines.

Here is the WWF coverage and reward info:

I hope they took DNA samples because this fin will be in some chinese restaurant on display. Find the fin and you'll find the supplier. It will take a few weeks for the fin to be dried and processed before the sale.

  3. Lets hope the culprits are found and they have their arms and legs cut off and left to die .

  4. Sadly there was only ever going to be one outcome with this shark. For all the efforts that the locals tried to help it, they would have been better off putting a bullet into its brain. I do not know of any shark that has survived after having so much damage done to it. I am pretty confident that the (people) arse holes responsible will be found in the near future.

  5. Really, really sad...

  6. Absolute disgrace for Philippines Whale Shark Populations. Im in Southern Leyte, another Whale shark haven in the philippines and have been swimming with them over the last few weeks. Its so sad that the filipino fishermen are so poorly educated to see that these creatures are worth far more alive.

A massive shout out to my colleague Elson, head of the WWF Ph Whale shark project in Batangas, and hope he can hunt down the culprits and bring them to justice.

My other concern is how little coverage this gets in comparison to an Orca, in captivity, doing what its natural instinct tell it to do...

  7. Terrible news, I agree about the lack of publicity on this topic.

    Very sad.

  8. Here is an update on the saga of this finned whaleshark in Anilao.

Update on Philippine governmental action against whale shark harm in Yahoo news.

Having seen and witnessed this shark's demise in Anilao in Feb 2010, I hope that this fund will at least raise awareness of whale sharks and their more important role in the local economies as a magnet for tourists, divers and an indication of the health of their reefs.

  9. Nice to have a President who dives!

  10. Nice to have a President who dives!

Not only that, but one that likes to dive in Anilao. I was told that she was instrumental in getting the road to Mainit paved, too, so she could get to her dive sites more easily. A win-win for the community.

  11. Sorry to bring back bad memories but I just saw this & felt that it should be shared.

This video is in Cantonese, by HK's Apple Daily. WS Killed in Anilao

  12. OMG. Heartless b___d! May those who fed on its fins choked themselves! I had my 1st encounter of whale shark on my 1st trip to Anilao 3 years ago.
